345192 2005-04-15 09:21:00 I am running XP Pro on my Asus A2500H Laptop. I bought a Genius headset with the idea of using Skypeout for my toll calls. However, when I try to use the mike no one can hear me.
I have looked in Speech under control panel and there is no tab for speech recognition as there should be.
I am told it sounds like a hardware fault.
The unit is under guarantee but I am nervous about sending it to Auckland to let someone I don't know fiddle with it.
Anyone got an opinion about how I can rectify this problem without letting it out of my sight?
Thanks,
Rob

345193 2005-04-15 11:54:00 When you say 'no one' have you tried more than 1 person. Fault maybe at their end?

Tried here? --> support.skype.com

Also, have you tried making a wav file for yourself using Sound Recorder? Start >programes >accessories >entertainment >sound recorder. The point is that if you can't make a successful recording, then you mike settings are not correct.

I hope something helps you here :-)

345194 2005-04-15 17:57:00 How about try testing your microphone on a different computer so that you can diagnose whether it is your own computer's fault or the microphone. Cheers :) Renmoo (66)

Yes I have tried more than One person. and yes I have tried making a wav file and yes I am assuming that the mike settings are incorrect, or maybe there is a hardware fault as the speech recognition tab is missing under control panel/ speech.
Jameskan, I will try the mike on the other computer, but I have no reason think it is faulty as it is brand new.
Thanks guys.

345196 2005-04-15 21:39:00 double clik that little speaker icon in the system tray (down on the lower right hand side of your screen by the clock).....then take a look to see if the mic shows up in the box of 'slider' controls that will pop up.....if it does make sure its not ticked to 'mute'....if it doesn't clik ........options/properties/.....and put a 'dot' in the recording box.......then clik 'ok' then in the box of 'slider' controls for 'recording' make sure you have a tick in the 'select' box for microphone...... drcspy (146)
345197 2005-04-15 21:41:00 oh yeh......and make sure you have the mic plugged into the mic socket on the pc NOT the 'line in' as the mic socket has a pre-amp built in and thus greater 'gain' if plugged into the line in socket the system will stuggle to pick up signal from the mic......... drcspy (146)
345198 2005-04-16 01:44:00 Thanks drcspy, I did all that and found that the mike wasn't on the list but it still doesn't work!!!!!!!~
Oh! and I tried the mike on another PC and while I couldn't hear what was recorded it showed on the digital readout as I recorded it

345200 2005-04-16 09:53:00 The other, drcspy is correct. If you have sorted the Win Vol controls as he said, it must be something to do with Skype..Have another look at the Skype options. There are several options there to check the sound. Bazza (407)

So you think it is not a hardware problem?????? Thanks drcspy I followed all that stuff but still no joy. If you guys think it is not a hardware problem, I will have a look at skype tomorrow.
Cheers,
