After logon first access of "my computer" results in long delay (2 to 3 mins) with waving torch icon before drives are found.
Microsoft Knowledge Base article No. 819017 identifies fault as either activation of Windows Image Aquisition (WIA), use of 2 particular modems, or use of 2 particular HP Scanjets. Deactivating WIA does not fix problem and I do not use any of the named modems or Scanjets.
HOWEVER, I do have an HP PSC 1210 Printer/Scanner and disconnecting this from its USB port before start-up solves the problem.
Does anyone have a fix that does not require me to keep on unplugging the printer?

When you reintsall it, just install the driver. Make sure it hasn't loaded piles of stuff into the startup which I find they usually do.
Go into RUN, type MSCONFIG and then select startup. Untick all the crap from here.
