345172 2005-04-20 07:04:00 Hi Graham. Yup I could but too early to say what approach to take yet. I could simply place the row # in an array then query the array each time etc but may be a waste of time if the chain is supposed to have multiple points which branch off thus each number may have multiple offshoots but this all depends upon what logic is used to decide where it starts/ends.Its more like a river than a chain - lots of branches that join onto the river, and maybe the river then joins a bigger river (like a branch)... I'll PM you and send an example including a diagram, plus the full xls file for you to look at.

No two pipes start with the same ID, but it is possible (and quite likely) for more than 1 to end with the same ID - ie two or three branches join the river at the same point... Hopefully the example will make it clearer.

It seems that imageF1 doesn't accept .doc files :( so I'll have to email it to you I suppose.

Cheers,
Mike.

345173 2005-04-20 08:45:00 Parry, can I ask how you have come to acquire such a vast understanding of excel? wotz (335)
345174 2005-04-20 09:09:00 Hi Wotz, I guess because I like using it but most of all because I like solving problems.

Ive always wanted to be able to automate things or do things better so a few years ago I bought a book on Excel VBA programming (by John Walkenbach) and I realised this isnt so hard at all as most of it is just common sense. It also helped the book was in plain english and not too technical. Once you learn a few basics such as looping and how to refer to objects its pretty easy from there.

I have increased my knowledge quite considerably in a very short time by answering questions on forums. Less so now but often I dont know the answer myself when I begin as I wonder myself "how do you do that?" and its by having a go you learn some ways to resolve problems. I used to think I was pretty good at Excel until seeing just how clever some people are on forums so I wanted to help other people myself.

Mike.

No, a bit more comprehensive than that. Excel 2002 Programming with VBA although theres probably a 2003 or later version. Its very big (almost 1000 pages) but its styled in such a way that you only need to read the first few chapters to get started then refer to the other sections as needed. Also comes with a CD with lots of examples.

I checked out our library catalog for books by John Walkenbach and the dummies one came up, plus another one - it might be that one... I might be able to convince my boss to buy it for me ;)

345178 2005-04-21 10:45:00 Hi Mike, see Amazon (www.amazon.com) or his site (j-walk.com). I didnt realise he wrote the dummies book but I find those type of books pitched too low and it doesnt take long before they become redundant. Just go to Whitcoulls and have a browse and see what suits you best.

Btw, I havent forgotten about your problem I just havent had time yet. Probably not until the weekend.

regards,
Graham

345179 2005-04-21 11:07:00 No worries, thanks Graham. I've got the Excel guru at work still having a look too, and he's a bit stumped :D

Cheers,
Mike.

345180 2005-04-26 23:03:00 Well Graham, and others - I figured it out! :D :) Lots of vlookups (on vlookups ;)) and a bit of filtering, and a bit of copy and pasting, and it all worked :D Yay!

Thanks heaps for your help.

Mike.
