2005-04-14 14:29:00 | Hi, My problem is that every time I start up/re-boot the computer a sign comes up in windows telling me that some program wants a connection to the internet. There is aleast 5 different program name that come up requesting a connection. I suspect this is spy ware, but I have run an Ad Aware program, defragmentation and a disk error check but they didn't help. Also, msconfig and regedit will open for a few seconds and then shutdown, so I can't seem to use them to solve the problem. Any help would be very welcome cause it is slowing everything down alot.

There is aleast 5 different program name that come up requesting a connection. If possible, could you specify which type of firewall you are using? I suspect this is spy ware, but I have run an Ad Aware program, defragmentation and a disk error check but they didn't help. Have you try running Spybot S&D? Or scan your PC using Antivirus? Cheers :) |

2005-04-14 21:00:00 | Do a spyware scan with both ADaware and Spybot. WOuldn't hurt to run Hijackthis too - if you aren't sure of what to delete from that - post the results here and someone will be able to help. | pctek (84) | |

2005-04-15 11:45:00 | Thanks Johnboy, the Stinger program picked up 622 infected files and there is a big improvment in internet speed. But there a few programs still asking for a connection. I shall run a Spybot check now. jameskan, how can I find out what type of firewall I am using? Thanks

2005-04-15 11:57:00 | What programmes are asking to access the Net? I know Kaspersky sometimes asks to go on the Net before I have dialled up, as well as others. Lets not go racing round saying the sky is falling without too much evidence.

2005-04-15 12:03:00 | I have listed all of them in this thread. They are more .coms than programs on the computer

2005-04-15 17:13:00 | jameskan, how can I find out what type of firewall I am using? Thanks If you are using SP2, go to Security center and see what / which type of firewall is listed under the "Firewall" section. Since you said that your Internet speed has improved remarkably after running Stinger scan, am I right that you don't have any antivirus on your computer? There are a couple of free ones out there, like AVG Antivirus (www.grisoft.com) as well as Avast (http:) . Boot into safe mode and give your computer a thorough antivirus, anti-spyware and ad-aware scan. Try checking out MS Antispyware Beta (www.microsoft.com) for eradicating even tougher spywares. Cheers :)
