| 345979 | 2005-04-17 11:27:00 | I am running XP professional on a Compaq 9010 and on the start menu the "search" function has ceased to work. When i click on it the laptop freezes. Any suggestions?? I am also having problems opening some web sites when I try to search within the site. For example CBA bank, I can open up the home page but when trying to sign in it does not open up the page to enter pass words etc. After 2 or 3 minutes it just returns to the home page after displaying an almost blank page, just the header line and on the bottom the start line Any connection with the two problems ?? Any suggestions??? Thanks |

| 345985 | 2005-04-18 08:53:00 | Hi ronmar The two problems might be related. If you have a look at this "Why doesn't Search work?" (www.kellys-korner-xp.com), it mentions that some ad-blocking programs, proxies or firewalls can cause problems. This could also explain your website problems where pop-up (login) windows might be involved. Do you have a ad-blocking program installed? Try disabling it if you do. |

| 345987 | 2005-04-18 23:08:00 | gidday, If all else fails, you could use system restore to go back to an earlier date, when it was working properly, be sure to back up important stuff first. cheers, robby |

| 345988 | 2005-04-19 06:03:00 | To Jen - thank you also but my "problem" will not allow me to open "why dosent search work"This is what it said: Question: Why doesn't Search work? Open Explorer and go to the Windows\inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the i386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD). The Windows\inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\inf to open directly to the inf folder. Error: "A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run setup". The file that is missing, or corrupt, is one of two. BAR.XSL or BALLOON.XSL (and/or other files in the same folder), depending on your search preferences. These files are both normally located in the Windows\srchasst\mui\0409 folder on your hard drive. These files may be locally cached in the Temporary Internet Files, so this may explain why some users have this problem "intermittently". Re-installing srchasst.inf works here as well. Error Message: "A File That Is Required to Run Search Companion Cannot Be Found" (Q315330) Windows XP Search Companion Does Not Work Because of File Corruption (Downloadable Fix) The problem stems from Search Assistant being unable to connect to http://sa.windows.com. This can be caused by proxy servers, firewalls and some "ad blocking" software. Do you actually have any ad-blocking software installed? |
