345896 2005-04-17 06:28:00 Hey Guys, Just wondering if you can help me out with a choice in a new modem, im on xtra jetstream.

I purchased the jetstream starter modem; a alcatel speedtouch 330. It was just a single line USB modem, you had to dial up to get connected to broadband.

I want a 4 port ethernet modem. With ethernet you just turn the compiter on, and your automatically connected without any dial-up? Is this true?

Also, say if my main computer has one ethernet port in the motherboard, how would i connect to the internet, and my local area connection. Would i need two ethernet ports? I need to share the internet between three computers at home.

Sorry I hope you understand what I mean, Thanks for your Advice.

345897 2005-04-17 06:32:00 My brother uses the Dynalink 4 port. Seems fine. Has a firewall too.
Although he still uses ZA too.

You connect each PC to a router port from the PCs ethernet port. Thats it. All you need to do. Enter the login nmae and password for your ISP into the router and you're away, nothing else you need to do.

345898 2005-04-17 06:36:00 i don't like USB modems at all.

with ethernet adsl modem i would prefer a single outlet modem and a seperate network switch. nothing worse than having a 4 port modem that packs a said and you loose your entire network.

What exactly do you mean, how could it lose the whole network? And do ethernet modems get higher speeds? And do they just connect straight away with no dial up? And why is it that you dislike usb modems? THANKS ALOT GUYS VERY GREATFUL! :) :)

345900 2005-04-17 06:41:00 If u only have 1 ethernet port, and nothing else has an ethernet port, u may need a hub. So, u can connect other PC to the net thru it. Speedy Gonzales (78)

345902 2005-04-17 07:14:00 USB adsl modems are generally software modems which isn't great. add to that the fun and games USB can make means a less than reliable setup. as a general rule external modems (ethernet adsl and serial dailup) will handle poor lines better.

a 4 port adsl modem is basicly a adsl modem with a 4 port hub built in. obviously if the modem dies (ie unplug the power) the 4 port hub won't work and your network will not work.
