345840 2005-04-16 23:59:00 What's the best ad/pop-up blocker that's not on a toolbar.

I need a good recommendation. :D

I use firefox... but i still get popups and ads. No it's not spyware, some sites I go to have paypopup on it and open up new firefox browsers... even thouhg it's just a blank white page.

I mean something like stop zilla, super ad blocker, etc.

345844 2005-04-17 00:27:00 Windows XP SP2 with IE6 has a popup blocker. I don't get popups anymore.

345845 2005-04-17 00:40:00 You could get an extention for Firefox called Adblock I find that works good. Overdrive_5000 (4950)

Since you already use Firefox, I suppose your talking about stopping the 'new' types of popups (not necessarily the ads in the popups which may not even display if you have a good hosts file (www.mvps.org)) which aren't blocked by traditional popup blockers. These popups exploit the fact that popups from plugins (such as flash files) arent blocked by Firefox.

You might want to read this article at mozillazine (www.mozillazine.org), couple of weeks old and doesnt look too successful so far but worth a read.

345847 2005-04-17 03:47:00 A decent firewall with all the custom stuff turned on. Cause it will also block some legit sites too. pctek (84)

345849 2005-04-17 04:04:00 I use:

Firefox 1.03 (I think some of the security fixes address the new breed of "popups" targetted at Firefox)

Flashblock extension
Adblock extension with filter at here (www.geocities.com) and set to block ads rather than hide them

I ahve seen any ads or popup windows recently and if some site persists with them I'd drop an email to them and never go back there.
