I was going to use this on a MSI Socket 478 board but the CPU in it is a P4 2.4Ghz.
Their site states :
Intel: Pentium-4 socket-478 3.06 GHz and above

Anyone see why this would matter?

345650 2005-04-16 08:30:00 It just tells you that it can handle the high frequency CPU speeds in terms of cooling. If you have a lower speed CPU then it would still work... provided it will fit in your mobo.

Incidently there are better coolers out there than this one... and considering the dBA level for this one is 55 I would look for a slightly quieter one. Anything lower than 25dBA is quiet.

cheers

Aha. Great. Wondered why it should matter...
The dba is dependent on the fan - its going to get a Vantec STealth. Quiet enough.
And I have to use this - they broke the stnadard RM on their MB - hence this one as it comes with its own RM. Don't know of any other s478 coolers that do.

ANyway I have a XP90 in my system (with VS fan) and temps went down 10 degrees with it so I'm quite happy with mine.

Better coolers? You should name them for the curious.

55dBA @ 4800rpm 110cfm - who needs that much airflow? The noise would obviously be much less at a more typical 2000 - 2500rpm. Anyway dBA figures from most HS manufacturers are so unreliable as to be worthless.

345653 2005-04-16 09:55:00 Slightly off track but still to do with cooling and fans.... what sizes of fans are available for case fans? as in diameter? pref small to medium sized (can you get different sized fans?) Myth (110)
345654 2005-04-16 11:20:00 one word of caution here.....thin finneded and exspecially if the fins are close together (and worse still if its a cooper heatsink) is that slow fans work very poorly. they simply can't push enough airflow though and you can end up with cooling problems. match the fan to the heatsink. if you want it quieter i suggest finding a different heatsink.

case fans, normally 80mm or 120mm. sometimes you will get a case that will fit 90mm or 70mm. note thicker the better. 25mm thick fans usually flow better than 10mm thick ones.

60, 80, 92, 120, and they vary immensely as to noise. Check out this noise listening lab - doesn't have the Vantec sound file tho....Take my word for it, its quiet.

As I said, I have an XP90 in mine with a Vantec Stealth fan on it. Cooling is excellent.

They need the SP94 cause they BROKE the RM on their MB - so other types of cooler are pointless - what is there to clip the heatsink to?? Chnaces of finding another stock RM for their board is slim..
