345555 2005-04-16 04:22:00 is there a way of getting external ram? as with my system I have only got two slots which is typical Compaq  . Can anybody tell me if there is external ram as I live in New Zealand. bart687 (7909)
345556 2005-04-16 05:08:00 I dont think so. You have to put it in the case.

Either get more ram to go with what u have, depending on how much ram the motherboard can handle.

Or replace the motherboard, with a more recent mobo that has more slots, and one that can take more memory.

345557 2005-04-16 05:13:00 there is some however it would be hard to find and dosn't really run very fast.

what pc do you have? os?
or at the very least what chipset is it running?

it would be better to simply max out the slots you have.

345559 2005-04-16 05:56:00 the ones i've seen are PCI card. you could add upto 4 gig of ram (pc133) however the pci slot is a big bottle neck. tweak'e (69)
345560 2005-04-16 06:06:00 Oh! I was imagining RAM sitting in some kind of slot thing on the desk outside of the computer case. :p :D FoxyMX (5)
345561 2005-04-16 06:08:00 I doubt that there would be a PCI card, and that it'll take up to 4 gb of ram .

Not many versions of windows, (unless you're running a server or something), or motherboard (unless its for some kinda server), for that matter can go beyond 4 gb (if you filled up the PCI card (upto 4 GB), and what's in the case already) . More recent mobos support upto 4 GB of ram alone .

345562 2005-04-16 06:24:00 Tweak'e is correct, despite the doubts of Speedy.

The maker (Ramix) seems to have been taken over by GE, but a 1 GB card is shown here:

Not an option you would consider for a home PC though, in general. Expensive and slow, as suggested. A new motherboard would probably be a lot cheaper.

345563 2005-04-16 06:29:00 Well, I didnt say they didnt exist and he said 4 not 1 GB :D Speedy Gonzales (78)

That is what I imagined it to look like but sitting on the desk. :p

Well.... "external" means "outside", doesn't it? :D
