Hi

I am just looking for some advice from those of you out there in the know.

I have a small form factor pc which I am going to set up in the lounge of my address. It is running a Celeron 500 with 256MB ram and I am installing Windows XP Professional on it. I am networking it to my main computer in the rear room of the house and intend to use it to play the music files from my main computer through the stereo in the lounge.

The small form factor does not have an AGP slot and I do not want to use a separate monitor in the lounge - I want to use my 42" rear projection tv as the screen.

As I see it I have two options to get the signal from the PC to the TV:

1) Buy a PCI graphics card with TV out (around $90 for a Radeon 7000 64MB)

or

2) Buy one of those external boxes that changes the signal and then displays it on the TV

Does anybody have any experience of these setups and which would be likely to give me the best picture quality?

Feel free to offer any other suggestions as a way around this.

Thanks in advance.

Tukapa. :)

I'd like to say that I'm 100% sure, but I'm not. 99% yes....
From everything I have read, the best resolution that you will get out of S-Video is 640 X 480. Hardly high-definition.
So, basically, connecting a computer to a TV via s-video interface is going to look like c**....... Until you can get the resolution above the 480i, text won't be clear on a large screen TV. This is not as noticable on a small 25 or 35 inch screen, but when you go to a 50 to 60+ inch screen it is obvious. "

345497 2005-04-16 06:05:00 Don't be surprised if the Celeron 500 struggles to keep up with some tasks under XP.

You are around the lower end of the useable speed for a CPU under XP.

345498 2005-04-18 07:49:00 Hi,
Yes I have had a similar setup. I had a 34 inch CRT tv as a monitor. I used it as a video recorder and Juke Box. The tv works fine if you only want to watch recorded video or a DVD but using an analogue tv as a computer display is futile. The resolution is crap. You can hardly make out any text. My advice is use a small LCD screen for your PC video. I gave up and bought a proper DVD recorder.
