345565 2005-04-16 06:34:00 Oh! I was imagining RAM sitting in some kind of slot thing on the desk outside of the computer case. :p :D
I was thinking that the external RAM might be a long stick sticking out of your USB port! Cheers :)

345566 2005-04-16 06:35:00 As mentioned, your motherboard manual should specifiy how much RAM it can take (max size) so it might be easier to replace one or both of the smaller sticks with larger capacity RAM. What OS are you using and how old is your computer? If you don't have a motherboard manual, then Compaq should have the specifications of your model on their website.

If you do want to go the replacement motherboard way, then depending upon how old your system is, newer motherboards might not be compatible with all your current hardware and you might be looking at a bigger upgrade than planned. Also consider that Compaqs are generally small form factor boards and you will need to be careful about what size board you get, or you will be looking at a new case as well.

345567 2005-04-16 07:27:00 I doubt that there would be a PCI card, and that it'll take up to 4 gb of ram.

Not many versions of windows, (unless you're running a server or something), or motherboard (unless its for some kinda server), for that matter can go beyond 4 gb (if you filled up the PCI card (upto 4 GB), and what's in the case already). More recent mobos support upto 4 GB of ram alone.

NT and nix can handle that amount of ram (even 9x can address up near 4 gig or so). yes it was a pci card (could even dig out the info but it might take some time).
as you have guessed most of them would have been used for server useage or specialist tasks. 4 gig of ram at the time would have cost more than the whole pc!

345568 2005-04-16 07:54:00 Well 98x may or may not handle 4gb .

BUT if the mobo can only handle 2-3 gb it wont . Well I know NT and higher can . And most probably NIX . I wouldnt know, never used it .

345569 2005-04-16 08:23:00 Speedy, the mobo RAM slot limitation is the address lines that are provided to the RAM slot in a motherboard.

A PCI card does not necessarily share those limitations.

This is academic of course as nobody would be able to afford the PCI RAM card anyway, relative to a new motherboard, but your logic is not necessarily correct.

345570 2005-04-16 08:30:00 lol ok ok well I shall shutup, since I'll never find out as u say GF since it's most probably not even here in NZ, and noone would be able to afford it to find out anyway .

Reminds me when I got a RAID card and put it in a P3 550 slot 1 system which used 133 ram lol . It was slow as a snail .

It worked, BUT u could have gone to lunch and tea, and come back it'll still be loading windows .

345571 2005-04-17 04:55:00 I've got a couple of ISA cards which hold 2MB of RAM . One of them is still in a computer . It gave me a total of 6MB so I could run Linux on that 386SX-20 (only 4 30-pin SIMM sockets on the motherboard, and 4MB SIMMs were very expensive) .

All the memory on the B6900 was external . There was a rack cabinet for the memory modules . ;)
