346409 2005-04-18 11:07:00 Good day all,

I started testing ghost 2003 but i found out that i'm going to make like more than 100 ghost images, cause all the different computers with different hardware in our company. :badpc: i would like to know if thers i workaround it where i can make only 1 image instead of 100, the other problem i also found with ghost is that the computer that i'm testing on can only use usb keyboard and mice-unfortunetly it not allowing me to choose USB 1.1 additional drivers(i can well choose USB 2.0 drivers but that doesn't work) what leads that my ghost doesn't load and i can't return to windows-and that means that i must reinstall windows all over again, Well start all over again...

346410 2005-04-18 11:15:00 Are the specs for the 100 computers same? Could you tell us more detail about the way they are networked up and the computer's specification? Cheers :) Renmoo (66)

Insufficent information .

An informed reply will begin with knowledge of what operating systems, type of installation, location of machines, whether networked, type of network, etc .

Insufficient information supplied when a trained network administrator would know what the answers would be .

However, based on what has been posted, my reply to

i found out that i'm going to make like more than 100 ghost images, cause all the different computers with different hardware in our company . :badpc: i would like to know if thers i workaround it where i can make only 1 image instead of 100
is no if a full system image is required .

as for the other issue, the answer lies in google .

346413 2005-04-18 13:40:00 You want the corporate Edition which allows you to build a base system image and then distribute applications via exe packages to build/image a complete system to your specifications. Chilling_Silence (9)
346414 2005-04-19 09:51:00 Well were in a mixed environment-weve got windows NT,XP,2000,ect. Hardware wise: from Pentium 2-4 different speeds, different network cards from 3com to smb to accton to radeon ect, different sound cards-weve got so many different pc's with different hardware specs, Network wise pc's in different location-so to say the whole site from ground floor upstairs downstairs to warehouse to manufacturing ect mostly star network- that's why i was wondering if there's a way to get past the fact that all hardware must be identical to create an ghost image(isn't ther perhaps a way to get past the fact that i can create a image without the fact being that the hardware must be identical?) gizmo084 (7928)
346415 2005-04-19 11:53:00 Sysprep is what you are after, along with some folders with loads of drivers.

Of course you'll need one image for 2000 and one image for XP.
Dunno about NT 4 (ek!)

Microsoft provide sysprep as one of their deployment tools.

Basically, Sysprep strips out hardware specific stuff from your master Pc used for imaging. Upon a cloned PC booting it results in a re-run of a mini XP (or 2000) setup i.e. reinstalls drivers, sets computer name, network settings.

I have a XP image at work over 3 CDs (it includes Office 2003 and some other stuff), that seems to work of a good range of Dells, more custom PCs. The worst that can happen is that you find a machine that is missing a few drivers such as sound or video - in that case you find the drivers and stick them into the next version of your image.

I make the image on a pretty old PC (with the smallest hard drive) that has PS/2 keyboards/mice so it isn't a problem for me. I've seen some annoying problems with USB only PCs in that you had to reboot them a few times to get them work. They should work ok from a syspreped image though.

346416 2005-04-19 14:20:00 Wrong advice .

Syspart not sysprep either on a network share or CD and for an unattended install, system specific answer files either locally or on a network share .

Slipstream service packs .

Create customised user templates, create users and drop them into groups designed to suit the business . Set permissions on groups and restrict folder, file and software access to groups rather than users .

Upgrade to recent versions of software and use Group Policies to install software through customised snap-ins . Include in answer files where possible .

Redesign and divide the domain into manageable subdomains with each sub-domain having identical machine hardware before using Ghost and Multicasting or Sysprep .

Prepare a presentation for management outling the benefits for improvements, highlighting features that will show such items as increased productivity and reduced maintenance .

However, putting it bluntly, you really sound like you are out of your depth and are struggling to understand what you want to/or have been asked to do . You may be better to stand aside and employ someone who can .

346417 2005-04-21 23:14:00 Acronis 8 supports USB in Dos, and will also make an Image of the system without leaving Windows. You can also make an Image from Dos if you wish.

It costs much less than Ghost and is faster.
