| 346332 | 2005-04-18 08:31:00 | I've read most (if not all) the threads on PressF1 about UBS and the situation looks pretty awful. However, I would still like to know which of those plans are the "lesser evil" and have the best download and upload speeds. And I'm wondering if those slow downs have gone yet? Or has it got worse? Thank you in advance for your input. |

| 346333 | 2005-04-18 08:59:00 | It would seem best to avoid UBS (i.e. go with Xtra) to avoid the slowdowns. On UBS, all ISPs are trying to get rid of their heavy downloaders. Personally I'd just go with the cheapest and going by personal experience Orcon would have to be cheaper by about $10 a month to make it worthwhile. It depends whether you are: 1) Joe Bloggs who just surfs the web and emails (then Orcon is fine) 2) Hardcore online gamer (then avoid UBS) 3) Mr peer-to-peer (I guess you just have to take an "unlimited" plan) Don't worry about upload speeds, as you only get 128K anyway and strangely no one seems to traffic shape it. |

| 346336 | 2005-04-18 23:56:00 | I'm on slingshot on their unlimited plan. No caps and no slowdown after a certain amount reached (according to their website). Download speeds are consistent around the 30KB mark (which is what you'd expect from 256k connection). I'm happy with them. $49.95 a month for 256k down and 128k up. M. |

Not all ISP's are selling UBS, and Xtra certainly aren't the only one selling standard JetStream. On UBS, all ISPs are trying to get rid of their heavy downloaders. No, they are trying to manage them effectively. Personally I'd just go with the cheapest and going by personal experience Orcon would have to be cheaper by about $10 a month to make it worthwhile.Bad advice. You get what you pay for, take KoL for example. Don't worry about upload speeds, as you only get 128K anyway and strangely no one seems to traffic shape it.No surprises there, whats the point in wasting resources shaping 128K, it's not exactly network threatening. |
