347242 2005-04-21 06:48:00 Hi Guys, I know i have seen the answer to this on PF1, however can't seem to find it with any searches.

What i am wanting to do is either:

A: Put an exe file in startup folder to run "Scan for new Hardware"

B: Have a Desktop shortcut to the .exe to scan for Hardware changes.

Neighbors external modem wont always detect - but will when you scan again, so thought to make it easier for them i could perhaps add one of the above to startup or desktop shortcut??

***This doesn't appear to be a driver problem, just that it won't always be detected, i.e if they forget to turn it on before boot.

Any other ideas appreciated, but am sure this has been discussed here before?

347243 2005-04-21 06:55:00 Why dont they use add hardware for new hardware??

Or create a shortcut from Add hardware in control panel.

Sounds like the modem needs replacing.

347244 2005-04-21 07:17:00 Hi Speedy, perhaps i didn't explain myself very well in hindsight sorry.

The Modem has been install via the new hardware etc...
And i believe this may be a commish problem with external modems, as my external on my 2000 pro system does it from time to time to, but "i" know just to hit the scan for hardware and it will detect it immediately sweet  .

So theres no need to be actually installing it every time thru "add hardware'.

Hope that makes sense?

Really i just want to make it simpler/easier for them if it doesn't detect, rather than having to go to device manager etc... I know it can be done and has been mentioned here before by perhaps Mike or GF?

I really just need to know what the path/exe or command is for this.

Thanks

347245 2005-04-21 07:32:00 The icons in the control panel are actually cpl files .

The add hardware icon is hdwwiz . cpl . All the icons are cpl files in control panel . Do a search for * . cpl the top entries that appear are the control panel icons .

All u do is right mouse on start/explore all users .

Go to startup / new shortcut type hdwwiz . cpl thats it . This
will only bring the wizard up, you still have to press next to scan for hardware .

347246 2005-04-21 08:10:00 Thanks Speedy, i was really hoping to avoid that avenue as i know it will just confuse them, and also there is no need to go thru the process of installing drivers etc . . . again which that way will do, as they are already having to learn WinXp from ME, as well as being relatively inexperienced on ME, as its a new system .

If i could just get the file that is used when you right click in "Device Manager" - "Scan for hardware changes" - which will immediatly detect it and make it usable without any other intervention on their part, it would make things so much easier  .

Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it :)

347247 2005-04-21 08:30:00 Not sure that avenue is available, but even if it was I would think a reboot with the modem powered up is preferable. The "file" you refer to could even be a "call" to a .dll and therefore may be inacessible in that manner.

XP will not detect the modem if it is not powered up (in fact it may disable the port as well under some circumstances from memory) as it is part of the "security" features of XP, and it is by design, not a bug.

I got around this by feeding all peripherals from a power strip which I modified so that it was only "live" when the PC was booted (it detected the USB power), so the monitor, printer and modem were all left "on" but were powered off untill the PC was turned on. These are not commercially available as far as I am aware though.

347248 2005-04-21 08:40:00 Theres a setting under properties of the device in Device Manager which is um, I forget its exact wording - sleep? sort of thing when idle. Untick it.
Also, yes make sure the modem is switched on before booting the PC.
And if its really too much for them - why not install an internal modem for them?

347249 2005-04-21 08:49:00 Thanks GF, i am starting to think i am dreaming, but i was really sure somebody like you or Mike had found a solution for a desktop shortcut to run it or the like, ahh well .. .
The main problem i think, is that when using winME they could always just turn the modem on when they wanted it and it detected fine (so they tell me), i.e instead of before booting, so they have got into the habit of doing this, however now using XP (as you mention) it won't work the way they are familiar with.

The setup your talking about sounds like a good way to go  .

Starting to sound like what i want isnt going to be possible .. . but i appreciate you guys input anyway, thanks ;).

347250 2005-04-22 02:04:00 Thanks GF, i am starting to think i am dreaming, but i was really sure somebody like you or Mike had found a solution for a desktop shortcut to run it or the like, ahh well...Was definitely something to do with me, but it wasn't me solving it - it was me asking the question ;) But that said, the question was answered at the time, so I'll have a look tonight when I get home and see if I can find the solution (unless someone answers before then). I don't use the method anymore as I've since replaced the external dial-up with ADSL, so had no more need for it, but I'll try to find the post at least...

Hopefully I remember to look tonight ;)

Mike.

Try using the devcon command line util from microsoft:
. microsoft . com/default . aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q311272" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com
Use the Rescan option .
