347123 2005-04-22 02:11:00 Struck a problem. In Disk Management it is only seeing 32GB straight off. This is even before I try to partition/format. Any pointers ?
System: Asus Laptop XP Pro SP1 USB2.0
Thanks
Cheers

347124 2005-04-22 05:35:00 [QUOTE=cjknight]Since the external HDD will mainly be used with W2k and XP machines, I've decided to make a 120Gb partition in NTFS and the rest in a FAT32 partition for the 98SE machine. Plenty there for backups. Just have to remember if I have anything to be t'ferred to 98SE machine, to put it in the FAT32 folder !

Thanks for this thread, cjknight.I've just had 2 160Gb external drives formatted as Fat 32,in case I need to rescue friends data.Had a 120Gb before which worked well, and never thought of the size problem with 98 or ME,because it worked! So I must do the same.

347125 2005-04-22 11:00:00 Use Microsoft's updated Fdisk (support.microsoft.com) to create partitions larger than 32GB but remember to keep them smaller than 137GB.

You could use other partitioning tools but using Fdisk will ensure maximum compatibility with Windows.
The MS page refers to the max HD size but does not actually say the new Fdisk will routinely do larger than 32 GB. Pse claify.

347127 2005-04-22 11:25:00 I'm not quite sure what you mean, Tony .

The new fdisk corrects problems with computers where fdisk does not correctly report the size of partitions greater than 64GB . That is what the new fdisk is supposed to fix . It is still a bad idea to create partitions larger than 137GB in FAT32 though, for the reason I specified earlier .

Does that help?

347128 2005-04-22 11:50:00 Not quite. Earlier discussion was about the point that Fdisk will not create partitions larger than 32 GB, but that it will recognise >32GB created by say PMagic.
Your msg refers to creating partitions >32 Mb. Will the new Fdisk do this routinely ?

Cheers Tony

347129 2005-04-22 13:26:00 Its working now. Just powered down and left it for 5 minutes. When I rebooted, everything went smoothly.
Thanks for all the help though. I've learnt a fair bit :-D

The person who said that FDISK will not create partitions larger than 32GB was incorrect . It does .

As far as I know FDISK will create partitions of any size you wish but the "old" FDISK will not report the partition size correctly with partitions greater than 64MB . The "new" FDISK will report partitions sizes larger than 64MB correctly .

When you say "Will the new Fdisk do this routinely ?", if you mean "is the default partition size 32MB" then I don't think it would be . Partition managers don't have a "default" size as far as I know - you decide what size you want and specify that size .

Have I got it right this time? :p

347131 2005-04-24 00:20:00 Seems so. I had taken from earlier messages that if you wanted a partition >32, you used Fdisk to make 32 and say PM to resize it. TonyF (246)
347132 2005-04-24 01:45:00 Nah, it is not as fiddly as that. It has been a couple of years since I last had to use FDISK (the older version) to partition the old PC so I have forgotten exactly how to do it but it wasn't difficult. This website (http://fdisk.radified.com/) is my bible for figuring out FDISK's mysteries so you might want to bookmark it for possible future reference. FoxyMX (5)
