347252 2005-04-22 04:38:00 Thanks Mike, apppreciate it, i was rather sure it was you or GF  , in saying that, when you do a search on the new (this) forum using names, of course it will only bring up the posts done since this forum started.

Biff - thanks also, i had a look at Devcon last night, still not "quite" what i am after i don't think, but appreciate the suggestion..

I think it was a batch file perhaps?? (The way Mike sorted it).

347253 2005-04-22 04:55:00 A USB switched power strip like that built by GF has been published as a project by Silicon Chip magazine.

Jaycar have the kit as KC5401 which has the PCB and electronic parts but not the power strip. It's on page 25 of their 2005 catalogue.

But I'd be inclined to try an internal modem. ;)

347254 2005-04-22 10:37:00 Yes i must admit i was a little surprised his new "Dell" didnt have an internal modem (so was he), obviously classed as an added xtra with "Dell"?(having never personally brought one myself). Whereas, i believe HP and the likes dont even bother listing them (internal modems) as they are the norm.
One point to add is that we are rather rural and do have bad phone lines out here, which tends to lead me towards sticking with the rural external modem though, as supposedly they are a bit better aren't they? Then again, my internal modem i use with my XP system seems to work as well as the external modem i use on the other 2000pro system...

347255 2005-04-22 10:48:00 You need to remember that the majority of customers that Dell have (which are outside NZ) would never need a dial-up modem, they would have cable or DSL .

That would explain the non inclusion of a modem I suspect .

Stick with the Dynalink rural modem, it will be much more reliable .

Put a sticker beside the On button on the Dell, saying "turn the modem on!"

Great Mike, most appreciated  , i will give that a try tomorrow :).

BIFF - Sincere apologies  , you were onto it ;), i looked at Devcon the other night and didn't think it was quite going to cut it, obviously mistaken. Many thanks to you all.
