2005-04-20 21:57:00 | Hi all Just put together a 200MB external USB2 hard drive (Seagate). If possible I would like to be able to use/transfer files on W2K, XP and 98SE computers. Is this possible ? Thanks Cheers CJ

Is this possible ? Thanks Cheers CJ You will need to partition and format as FAT32 as 98SE will not handle NTFS |

2005-04-21 00:13:00 | Yeah FAT32 is the way to go. Also just wondering, you said 200mb. If it's a typo and you meant 200gb, it won't work, but yeah I'm jsut reading into too much, haha. smokenz

2005-04-21 02:30:00 | Yes, it was 200GB :-) I was just concerned that the 98SE machine wouldn't be able to deal with such a large drive. Thanks Cheers CJ

2005-04-21 03:09:00 | you will have to partition it into partitions that are less than 32GB and in FAT32 otherwise win98se wont see these drives, and the the bios wont like it if they are bigger than 32GB. am i right in saying this? | Prescott (11) | |
2005-04-21 03:42:00 | No, it _CAN_ handle partitions larger than it, I know because Ive formatted it in Linux and then used it later in XP and '98 Not sure how you'd go about doing it, but try something like QtParted on the SysRescueCD if you really get stuck, its only a 60-odd meg download

2005-04-21 03:49:00 | Hmm. Thought that might be the case :-( Guess the best way to go is to have two partitions; 32Gb in Fat32 for the 98SE machine and the other partition can be NTFS? At least the W2K and XP machines will be able to see both partitions ? Thanks Cheers CJ

2005-04-21 04:11:00 | You are not restricted to partitions 32GB or smaller but you will need to keep them less than 137GB or Scandisk and Defrag will corrupt the data on partitions greater than 137GB . Use Microsoft's updated Fdisk ( . microsoft . com/default . aspx?scid=kb;en-us;263044" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com) to create partitions larger than 32GB but remember to keep them smaller than 137GB . You could use other partitioning tools but using Fdisk will ensure maximum compatibility with Windows .
