| 346698 | 2005-04-19 12:12:00 | i hav a ZyAIR B-1000 v.2 wireless access point connected to my router and a notebook with internal wireless adaptor after i set it up without WEP enabled everything worked fine both internet and local traffic but after WEP was enabled both internet traffic and LAN stopped i've tried both 64 and 128bit, both stops network activity although window does show that it is connected i tried internet with firefox and IE, both didn't work, ping doesn't work either the Authentication Method used is set on Auto on my acess point and window is told to obtain th key itself on the notebook, PC-cillin 2004 is installed and i've tried with both firewall on and off, both didn't work the notebook is running WinXP Home SP1 hope this provides enough information for someone to help me..thanx |

| 346701 | 2005-04-19 21:58:00 | I havn't done too many wireless networks, so I can't recall from memory the exact terms. I havn't read those articles posted by JohnBoy but you probably want to set a manual WEP key on your access point, then configure the connection on your PC/Laptop and put the same manual key in there. Because having WEP set to Auto, and your pc set to Auto how does that secure it? I could sit outside with my laptop and set it to auto, and then connect in? So that is probably why it doesn't work, as it's not secure and a software setting error or something. You should also set your access point to look for recognised mac addresses of wifi cards on PC's/Laptops. That provides a bit more protection. And make the wifi access point hidden as well. As long as you set it up manually on the laptop, put in the right SSID ?? name and follow the wizard through, choose WEP encryption and put in the WEP. It should then connect to it with no probs. A bit more effort, but definitely much more secure, especially if you are in a CBD area that has 100's of wireless networks scattered around the place, as well as users with wireless laptops looking for free internet. smokenz |
