347954 2005-04-23 12:08:00 Running Zonealarm Free and a D-Link dsl504g and trying to get file transfers via AIM messenger and MSN messenger to work...

I can't seem to be able to open ports with zonealarm free as this function is not included int he free version...

So... can anyone else suggest a good free friewall that will alow me to port forward or is buying zonealarm pro the best bet...

And does anyone know how good the build firewall in my d-link router is?

Thanks.

347955 2005-04-23 14:27:00 Two other free ones to try out, {url=http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm] Sygate[/url] and Kerio. (www.kerio.com)

BTW, firewalls don't forward ports, that is what your modem/router can do/does.

My mistake...

I guess I meant open ports ....

I had the same problem when I had dialup internet, in that I could not transfer files via AIM messenger on trillian. How does the WIndows XP SP2 firewall compare to Zonealarm free?

347957 2005-04-24 02:40:00 so what programs are you useing? trillian or AIM and messenger?

it could just be a trillian thing. however MSN on trillian normally works fine even with ZA. i suspect you will need to configure your dsl504g.

btw XP firewall is fairly useless.

347958 2005-04-24 05:19:00 port forwarding (www.portforward.com)

I believe you want TCP 5190 for AIM and for MSN Transfers: To enable file transfers, enable both incoming and outgoing TCP connections to the 6891-6900 range of TCP ports.

347959 2005-04-24 06:20:00 I am using AIM Messenger via Trillian...

I have found the needed ports to be opened as sytated above but with Zonealarm free you are unable to set up ports to be opened, only ip address and so forth...

So thats why I'm currently looking at other Firewalls and or a soulution to this problem...

Thansk for all your help so far, and apologies for being unclear....

Anyone have any more suggestions or options...???

I had the same problem when using dialup, in that I wasn't able to transfer files when using the AIM part of Trillian.

The actual chat function works fine... I have read that a certain port needs to be opened for use in transfering files.

Thanks.

347961 2005-04-25 03:34:00 Does anyone know what the built in firewall is like with the D-Link routers, especially the dsl504g....

Does it compare well to Zonealarm free?

I am reluctant to lose Zonealarm as it has served me well and it not very resource hungry in comparison to the Nortons and other such programs I have seen.

Is $49 (usd I'm guessing) reasonable for the one year updates of Zonealarm?

Thank as always.

347962 2005-04-25 04:06:00 updates of zonealarm?? the pro ver is a one off fee unless you get the ZA antivirus with it.

the dsl504g has its firewall (nat) which blocks a lot of incoming traffic which is why you need to port forward (as per link posted) so that certain apps can work.

MS firewall is incoming only, it dosn't stop anything going out.

I think it is for a years free updates . . .

Anyone use Sygate? Are you able to open ports for programs to use with Sygate Personal Firewall?

It says the free version has "Security Policy Customization" but I'm unsure what this means??

Thanks .
