347409 2005-04-22 03:42:00 I have a 5 gig video file on a NTFS formatted partition. I would like to put this file on a FAT32 partition. If I try just to copy it over it says there is not enough free space. The The file is only 5 gig but the amount of free space is 20 gig. What can I do to move this file over.

Any info would be apprecieated

347410 2005-04-22 03:51:00 You have run into a limitation of FAT32 file system. ( Maximum file size 4 GB minus 1 byte)

For a comparison of the FAT32 v NTFS limitations, have a look at this Microsoft Article (www.microsoft.com)

347411 2005-04-22 03:53:00 According to Microsoft, the maximum file size on a FAT32 partition is 4GB (-1 byte). It looks as if they are right. ;) Graham L (2)
347412 2005-04-22 05:07:00 You might want to try something like Truecrypt, which Im pretty sure is smart enough to auto-split the container file into smaller files. Use blowfish, its fastest. Chilling_Silence (9)
347413 2005-04-22 05:17:00 Of course. Thanks guys.I've been trying to save an image from my 2nd drive to my external one.Well, all the first few copied over ok,with this new pc,but then I got to my 5th image and it said"not enough room".Then the external Maxtor (120g) died,so I thought I'd killed it.But with my new external drives(2, nothing like losing all your backups!) it says the same, and they're Fat 32.Perhaps I need to run one as NTFS! Talk about missing the obvious. Neil McC (178)
