| 348039 | 2005-04-23 22:07:00 | could anyone advise if they have used MAILCLEANX an app for cleaning up OE bdx files etc from behappydamit.com ???? | kjaada (253) | ||
| 348040 | 2005-04-23 22:18:00 | The only mail cleaning program I can find on www.behappydammit.com is for removing forward >> marks out of emails. It doesn't clean out dbx files which are the files for your inbox, sent, contacts etc folders. | Jen (38) | ||
| 348041 | 2005-04-23 22:34:00 | OK then, how can I get rid of all the dbx files? also I have 3 or sometimes 4 of all my mail boxes and even some I have never heard of when I do a dbx search. Does thunderbird also have dbx boxes ? |

| 348042 | 2005-04-23 23:03:00 | The .dbx files contain all your emails. If you delete them you they will be recreated but you will lose any emails stored in the ones deleted. If you have a look at the location of all your .dbx files you will find that each user account has their own. Thunderbird and other email programs do not have .dbx but their own types of files to store the emails. Why are you concerned about getting rid of them? |

| 348043 | 2005-04-23 23:27:00 | Just as a side note: I just had a mate who was told by an institution (who should know better) how to set up her Outlook Express; subsequently it didn't work for a while. I re-set it up and she ended up downloading about 900 e-mails. The problem was she couldn't delete them. To anyone who has this problem: Close Outlook Express. Delete your Deleted Items.dbx folder (you will probably have to run a search for it... make sure you have 'Search in hidden and system files/folders' enabled). Reopen Outlook Express and the folder will be remade automatically. Solution comes from here (www.talkaboutsoftware.com) |

To "purge" the contents in the deleted items .dbx folder you need to go to File > Work Offline then File > Folder > Compact all folders. Afterwards go back to File > Work Offline again. |

Afterwards go back to File > Work Offline again. Thanks for that. It cured my problem as well. The purging feature is not well referenced in the literature. Nice one. |

| 348047 | 2005-04-24 01:49:00 | Outlook Express is set to compact mail folders after X amount of wasted space by default but it is not a good idea to let it do that because OE MUST be offline when compacting. If it starts receiving emails during a compacting session then the Inbox or emails can become corrupted. Also, it can sometimes be useful not to compact the Deleted Items too often in case you have accidentally deleted emails and wish to recover them. You are able to do this with DBXtract but once the file has been compacted they cannot be recovered easily. |
