349345 2005-04-27 09:44:00 Click on phone and modem options in control panel / modems tab.

It tells u here what COM port the modem is on.

349346 2005-04-27 09:50:00 By default, COM1. But if you go to ---> Start --> Control Panel -> System, it will come up with a System Dialogue. Click on the Hardware tab, then click the device manager button. In device manager scroll down to your modem, right click and select properties. In one of the tabs it will tell you everything about the beautiful dialling wizard. Aurealis_ (7897)
349347 2005-04-27 09:56:00 it seems that it is connected to COM3, but in device manager i dont have a COM3. how do i change it to COM1?

349348 2005-04-27 10:06:00 Neither have I . Only com 1 and 2 .

Altho, I wouldnt try changing com 3 to com1, it might conflict . . . COM 1 or 2 maybe in use for something else in the system .

349349 2005-04-27 10:11:00 im trying some of these tweaks because im getting a really slow connection. i can stay online for ages but my download speed is crap. updating my drivers did work abit but the performance was much better before i formated and installed SP2 Prescott (11)
349350 2005-04-27 10:15:00 If the modem is working fine I would leave it. By default Windows selects the first COM port available. So... 1&2 are probably already being used.

This Link (www.download.com) may help.

If possible, see if you can get a friendly laptop user to come and test your connection using their modem.

349352 2005-04-27 10:17:00 Well that could be anything, The ISP, the modem / line noise if u use 56k.

If the modem is OK now on COM3, it wont make any diff on COM1.

349353 2005-04-27 10:22:00 IIRC, COM3 is for dial-up modems on PCI boards, ergo it's a "virtual port" Edward (31)
