1384124 2014-09-17 23:39:00 Hi all, I have a pc in my bedroom which has a modem and a router set up for a laptop in the next room which i use all the time, it has been going great for the last couple of years, but yesterday I could not get a connection for the internet on my laptop.
I re ran the setup disc for my router in the bedroom and then tried again for a connection on my laptop again but it says i am connected but then drops out say i have no internet access.
My pc in the bedroom works fine being able to use the internet no problems, but the laptop in my lounge won't, i have tried another laptop in the next room and same thing happens.
I hope i have explained my problem correctly, so any help would be very appreciated.

1384125 2014-09-18 00:00:00 You need to say how the laptop is connected. Can we assume it is wifi connected?

If so, what signal strength is being shown on the laptop (how many bars)?

1384126 2014-09-18 00:10:00 Yes, the laptop is Wi Fi connected, that is why i have a router as well as a modem in my bedroom.
The connection strength shows it has excellent strength [ all the bars] but says no internet access, password is correct, it sorta tried to connect and says its connected for a couple of seconds but then drops out again.

I have to go out for a couple of hours now but will be back as soon as i can, thanks for your help.

1384127 2014-09-18 00:14:00 I would login to the router, and configure the router manually. Setup disks / cd's dont always work Speedy Gonzales (78)

Just what is the setup you have, you said modem + router . Is the router really a wifi access point ?
Why do you use a modem & a router ? Is there no wifi on the modem ?

What is the working PC connected to & how (wifi or cable)

Could be a config or cable issue between the modem & router , or 1 has gone faulty
Could also be a interference issue with the wifi. Any cordless phones or other 2.4Ghz devices ?

Plug the laptops direct into the modem if see if that works, then go backwards from there

1384129 2014-09-18 01:03:00 Try the real basic's first, reboot the modem & Router. Sometimes settings get them seleves in a twist and a simple reboot fixes it.

i have tried another laptop in the next room and same thing happens. That would indicate its not the Laptops causing the problems but the Wireless / Router.

1384130 2014-09-18 02:05:00 Hard to believe, but I have seen this before, Turn off Bluetooth on the lappies if they have it it operates on the same bandwidth and sometimes but shouldn't interfere wireless. beama (111)
1384131 2014-09-18 06:19:00 Thanks everyone for your replies, I have tried re booting the router and modem many times but still nothing.
I don't know how to manually configue the router,I have tried everything but still won't work, The modem is very old the router has to be 6 or 7 years old, might buy a new modem router and try that, it was running fine up to a couple days ago then the crap started happening.
thanks for your help guys.

1384132 2014-09-18 09:50:00 Yes, buying a new modem and router may fix your problem. Since both are already old, they are bound to become faulty. They might not be capable of allowing WiFi-connected devices to access the internet anymore. ruellesmith (17277)
1384133 2014-09-20 02:53:00 My Router drops out occasionally but a power off/on reboot brings it back on line. However, after that I still don't have web access until I reboot Windows. The same applies to our other computer, it has no access post router-reboot until my computer is rebooted, even though it uses a separate port on the router.

Based on that peculiar behaviour, and if the problem isn't already sorted, you could try rebooting your computer if you have not already done so.

Cheers
