From a company point of view putting these things online could save money thru hiring less staff, paying less to NZ Post to do the payment processes. This real time online feature should cost less. Ie - even if banks need to purcahse and install ATM machines that should cost less than hiring and training bank tellers.

Speaking of my experience if I was a teenager we would have to go with the added cost, Internet today might be essential for school work, my folks don't know how to use the computer. Someone could set up an email address and set up an auto payment but they wouldn't know how to access them or know the amounts (and check it) until they get their bank statement and it's been debited. Even today I know households where the parents don't know how to use a computer, they just pick up a landline / cellphone and make a voice call.

An option might be instead of letters, have a customer no. which they can register with various companies like electricity, telephone and they can present this no. or this card to NZ Post every fortnight who can tell them the amounts due and the date required.

I've been paying my Telecom bill online for some time from my ASB account ie cash card account. I'm not all that surprised about credit cards as they cost the retailer a percentage of the amount

Paying a surcharge I can somewhat stomach. What I can't is the fact that you can't do this online. This is telecom, the interwebs leader of NZ and they don't have an online payment system, more so when they are going paper less.
