1369697 2014-03-11 22:28:00 It seems BM that you have some sort of a misconception about how Parliament works. All members are required in the Debating Chamber only when a vote is about to be held. Otherwise the Whips decide who is needed to be present either to speak, or to make up the quorum. Question time is also when members are present unless granted leave by The Speaker. Perhaps a bit of research and learning would ease your mind and remove your need for constant sarcastic comment. Richard (739)

Well Richard I think you should check your facts.

For a start, from Parliaments own Website, you will find that the requirement of a Quorum went out in 1996 with the introduction of MMP and now only one Minister is required to be present.

The “Pairs System” also went out in 1996 with the introduction of MMP and today they can “proxy vote” so there is no real necessity to attend parliament for anything, something that has not gone unnoticed by a large number of the layabouts.

So dare I suggest Richard it is you who needs to keep up with the play. :)

1369699 2014-04-17 06:47:00 There seems to be little improvement in our Politicians attendance record. :annoyed:

1369702 2014-06-09 02:37:00 From today’s NZ Herald a front page article discussing the importance, or lack thereof, of John Banks resignation.

“Leader of the House Gerry Brownlee said that with 12 more hours of the Budget debate and 16 valedictory speeches to get through, there was little time for much other legislation between now and when the House rises next month”.

So some of them will try and fit in 12 hours work in the next month or so, but I guess they will all try and be there for the valedictory speeches and accompanying crayfish, oysters and champagne that follows.

It’s bloody had to get good staff I tell you. :groan:

LOL B.M.

It is entirely reasonable of you to raise the issue of an apparently empty Parliament. It looks bad at first glance.

However to the best of my memory under First Past the Post, Parliament used to be equally empty with only two members on each side.

The fact is, Parliament is the place for political posturing and occasional defaming a member of the public under Parliamentary privilege. In modern times the interesting activity has been distilled into Wednesday afternoon Question Time and that is where TV news gets its clips. You can watch it on the Parliament channel.

By contrast the real work is done in the Select Committees for which we have Geoffrey Palmer to thank. This is where public servants and members of the public can make submissions and go head to head with the polys.

Additionally any of us can insist on meeting an MP and presenting our arguments. You need to be organised with written points but they cannot ignore you.

In other words the real work of MPs is carried out in their offices which is what you'd expect. Sitting silently in Parliament for 100+ days is not how our political system works.

1369704 2014-06-10 21:52:00 We paid megabucks for a fancy pen, and then they let the swine out? Immediately after the election the elected should be put in the chamber and the doors locked until it is time to throw in the next batch. Think of the wear and tear saved on the doors if they only have to opened once every three years. It would save a lot on travel bills too. Volunteers with sharp sticks could happily deal with any MP trying his/her luck with the windows. R2x1 (4628)
