1370958	2014-03-23 02:26:00	I'm not strongly for or against changing the flag, but I am surprised that none of the alternative designs offered include the union Jack. As already pointed out we are a member of the British commonwealth, what's so wrong with displaying that on our flag? It shows our ties to other commonwealth nations and is part of our heritage too. Discussions of heritage and culture seem a bit one sided quite often, I'm a 5th generation Kiwi of European descent and the British commonwealth is part of my heritage as much as anything else people would like to put on the flag. So while I don't care if they change it I would like to see the Union Jack stay, Change the colours and design to something more kiwi if you wish but why not keep the union Jack as well. Actually I quite like our flag, just change the blue to black and I think that'd do it :)	dugimodo (138)

1370964	2014-03-25 19:36:00	Be careful what you wish for. Getting rid of the Union Jack from the flag may cause more harm than good. NZ is a Commonwealth country & the UK is morally bound to trade with us & help us if another country has a go at us. PJ There's not much common in the Commonwealth these days. I'm all for the black flag with the silver fern though some how I can't see it being changed in my life time. Anyone old enough to remember the drama when the change to decimal currency was announced. If so you will understand why..	paulw (1826)

The UK government is "morally bound" to promote the well-being of their own citizens above all else, and that obligation doesn't seem to affect their behaviour one iota. Just like our bunch.
