When NZ is becoming too expensive for most of the population to afford to live here, then its a big issue Its not just housing, also power , petrol, rates . I cant see ANY good reason why non NZ Residents should be able to buy land, they cant in many other countries. We cant buy land in their country. My crappy house is 'worth' $450k - $500k , for a generic crappy house . How can NZ'ers possibly afford that anymore. 1/2million for a small home. :groan: Chinese are only 25% of the overseas home buyers btw, so thats 1 myth busted. Perhaps an option is overseas buyers can only buy new homes ? |

God didn't give us the land, we had the motivation and the means and we made it so, Now another culture has their eye on the land, sink or swim at the end of the day it means nothing. Really all that's going to happen is the NZ population will get a bit more diverse. Poor people can't afford houses? Thats why we call em poor. In other countries poor people cant afford water and die off in the thousands. |

I'd agree most of this debate comes from anti Asian racism (who only are 1/4 of the overseas buyers) But do you think its a good thing for rich overseas buyers, WHO WONT EVEN LIVE OR RESIDE IN NZ, to buy up local housing, inflating prices to ridiculous levels ? There will allays be poor, but its getting so even the middle class wont be able to afford home ownership. It now not just about the poor, its about Joe Average not being able to afford housing. dont forget, inflated housing prices also pushes up rent costs. So its a double whammy. No wonder you get whole families having to live in someones garage. |
