| 1370362 | 2014-03-18 18:30:00 | Think about what it says. RFID is not used for instant payment. Try holding your card 150mm from the reader and doing a transaction. | R2x1 (4628) | ||

Back to the RFID point though a couple quotes; from my original link And RFID appears in so-called smart passports and credit cards from en.wikipedia.org credit, debit, or government issued identification cards.[6] Each of these cards carry a Radio frequency identification chip So yes I can't say for sure about all credit cards but the ones in the original story are using RFID, not NFC and the range is more about the scanners than anything else. |

In this instance they've gotta be physically very very close to you, and the card never leaves your person. It's called "NFC" (Near-field communication), for a reason. They've gotta be right on your ass and you'll know about it. The theoretical maximum range is ~10cm, though in reality it's usually around 1cm. It will be interesting to see which technology gets public acceptance the fastest. Westpac is already trialling the different technologies here. Apple is piloting iBeacon (mashable.com) which from what I can tell is supposed to leap frog RFID and NFC while helping locate you in the store and allow you to purchase goods in store via your phone. iBeacon comes with its own SDK (www.devfright.com) |

Was aware that you were discussing security measures on credit cards - hense the mention that Westpac was trialling a bunch of different technologies including NFC, RFID and mobile stuff for customers credit cards. |

| 1370369 | 2014-03-19 21:54:00 | Read the article again, credit cards use RFID not NFC Credit Cards use NFC, not RFID. They have an incredibly limited effective range, as pcuser42 mentioned. Usually holding your card 3cm above the terminal is too far away. While people in NZ may not be accustomed to handing over the credit card, the practice is all to common overseas, like in America. Finished your meal? Give them your credit card and write how much of a tip you're going to give them on the bill, they take it away and come back 5 minutes later after having processed it. There's no "double processing" of other payments etc. you see what's on the terminal screen, it tells you how much you're going to be charged, you tap your card on it and you're done. No need to constantly check your bank statements :-/ Holy balls people so much FUD, so much scaremongering when it's damningly obvious none of you have actually tried a bloody thing and haven't a clue what you're talking about. Try it before you condemn it to hell or you just come off like a bunch of blathering idiots really. That, or try asking a question about it before making up your mind! |

Customer was charged twice, IF he hadnt later checked his CC transactions, he would never have known There is so much FUD by those claiming there arnt any issues :p |
