1384858 2014-09-27 10:05:00 Yes another disk cloning thread.
I recently bought 2 Crucial MX100 256GB SSDs as at $159 I figured they'd reached a price where I couldn't resist for my laptop and media PC. I have a samsung 830 on my gaming rig and love it.

Anyway when I tried to clone the OS onto these drives I ran into all kinds of problems. Firstly they came with a key for Acronis hd edition so I thought I'd give that a try - it fails almost immediately with a file error I can't decipher.
So I dug out my Active@ boot disk and tried that - appeared to work on both machines but did not make a bootable copy of the disk. On the laptop doing a repair from the windows install disk sorted it out, on the other PC the repair fails and says the drive is locked. Honestly in the time this has taken I could have re-installed windows and set it updating.

So I see Easus todo has a free version that supports cloning to SSD, anyone tried that and can recommend it? I'm not sure what the issue is, whether it's because the drives are different sizes and the partition have to be resized or the target is an SSD or just that Acronis is borked and my Active@ is a year out of date (won't update without paying for a new licence). At this stage after many hours and two failed clones I'm about ready to just start over. Anyone care to recommend a reliable method?

1384860 2014-09-27 22:28:00 Thanks Wainui, that worked (well kinda).

Something weird, after trying several repair/refresh/restore options from the windows 8 disk with no luck I used Aomei to delete the partitions, did a sector copy of the hidden partition so it would stay the same size, and did a partition resize/copy of the main partition. When it finished and I booted off it windows repair ran ? how could it have survived having the partitions wiped and re-copied ?? Anyway cancelled out of it and booted up ok.

A couple minor issues still this time, Aomei wouldn't let me use the migrate OS wizard because I booted off the Aomei CD and had the original boot disk connected via a USB caddy. I think that wizard would have worked if the drive was re-installed internally.
By not using the wizard I caused the SSD to not be aligned properly which meant another step to re-align the partitions. I used mini partition wizard to do that because it has a simple alignment option.

I tried AS SSD benchmarking software on the disks, before alignment it scored 600, after it scored 937 (I'm suspicious of that number, but that's what it said). In my laptop with no alignment issues the same drive score 675. The samsung 830 in my gaming machine scores around 650.

1384861 2014-09-27 22:38:00 Whenever I've done any migrating the SSD drive usually came with its own Software, The samsung for example yo connect the drive (SSD) install the software, and it walks through the transfer wizard.. Other than that its been fresh installs.

Some reports say the Paragon software works very well www.paragon-software.com Its not free, and personally never tried it.

1384862 2014-09-28 00:55:00 Well sorted now, thanks for the help.

The crucial MX100 drives are very cheap for what you get and come with no software, just a key for acronis and that failed to do the job. I looked on crucials website hoping for some tools but there are none I could find.
A fresh install will probably happen eventually but for now I couldn't be bothered.

1384863 2014-09-28 20:25:00 I've been using EaseUS ToDO Backup Workstation 6.5 and it's a really good product.

It runs several scheduled backups for my rig over the weekend and does a great job getting them to my FreeNAS server, though I've not tried the cloning functionality yet but from what I've heard it is quite good.

Also just noticed they have released V7 of the backup product so might have a nosey at that one too.

EDIT: Forgot to mention EaseUS also has a disk partition application called Partition Master which is quite good as well (I have the Home Professional version) works a treat too.

Cheers,
