1370216 2014-03-14 17:37:00 I've long since come to the conclusion Met Service makes it up:

www.metservice.com

NIWA on the other hand seem more accurate:

weather.niwa.co.nz

So far nothing until 5am this morning, a few spits which added exactly nothing to the water tank - I've had to add a bit to do some washing.
Wind - a bit, not gale, just normal wind, on and off.

Every time MS say rain, we end up with far less than they say, the tank is an accurate gauge of how much we really get, which has been almost nothing in months.

1370217 2014-03-14 18:59:00 I find that METVUW (www.metvuw.com) is the most consistently reliable.
We are not very far from pctek, but we had a few gusts to 56 kmh around 2 am, light drizzle from midnight and gradually increasing rain since around 4:30. The wind has dropped, but the rain such as it is peaked at 14mm/hr at 7:30am Total 7.5mm for today so far, wind run today 147km so far, and currently averaging 23 kmh. Auckland's weather varies pretty wildly over small distances, but at least it is usually very mild weather.
The birds are really hammering the bugs on the lawn, otherwise, the weather is currently just about what the soil needs, - a gentle soak, and only gradually increasing. I guess farmers would be happy with another 60 or 70mm at least, preferably 100+

1370218 2014-03-14 19:07:00 In Hamilton I'm expecting it to take a while to get here but I started hearing gusty wind about 6:30 am and now at 8am it's starting to pick up a bit, just saw the neighbours taking furniture in from their deck.
Settling in for a wet windy day, I live under a pylon so here's hoping it doesn't get too crazy :)

Edit: I quite like this one earth.nullschool.net no predictions just a picture of what the wind is doing and pretty cool.

1370219 2014-03-14 19:22:00 The arborist coming to remove a few trees today rang a few minutes ago to postpone until Monday (surprise!)...

I use (and rely on) the Accuweather app on my phone/tablet - there is a site too: www.accuweather.com but it isn't as user friendly as the app (play.google.com)

Another one I found recently, which displays an animated four day forecast is Meteo Earth (play.google.com) (there is an iDevice version, if you swing that way), which can be interesting to watch - especially with a weather forecast like we currently have.

I like that one dugi. It gives a pretty good look at what is happening out there.
The weather experts are really good at telling us what has happened yesterday about tomorrow not so great. The current weather here is not even close to the dire predictions given last night. Maximum wind gust 39kmph and about 20mm of rain in the past 12 hours.

Ah yes, the Shore...when I worked over there, I found that, I could drive out of fine and calm and get to work and find wet and windy.
It was always windy there....

Bit more proper rain now but the wee tank is still nowhere near full - it's only a 1000l so a good downpour can fill it in a couple of hours.
Still, more washing to do now.....so hope it keeps up.

My lawn is brown and dead.

Better weather sites.....(Thanks Johcar)www.accuweather.com seems pretty good.

Yup, I regularly use Metvuw to get an outlook on the weather. Have to say that aside from being windy this cyclone doesn't seem to be nearly as wet as forecast. I'm currently staying down near Turangi and have hardly seen any rain. It's fairly breezy right now but no worse than normal.

Not sure what the weather is like in Auckland.

1370225 2014-03-14 21:10:00 Well I find looking at the Rain Radars the easiest way to establish if you’ll get the washing dry or not. ;)

HERE (metservice.com) is one covering a fair chunk of the North Island and as you can see it’s mainly light rain or drizzle with the odd heavier fall.

Hardly anything that looks remotely like emergency material to me. :D
