2005-04-29 07:29:00 | Hi a friend of mine is having trouble connecting to the net (xtra) from their laptop it was working fine up until today (i think), another pc can dialup from the same line fine. So would I be correct to think that the modem has gone bung ? I have told them to scan for viruses spyware etc. What would be the easiest way for them to test the modem ? Modem is onboard AC 97 modem | Overdrive_5000 (4950) | |
2005-04-29 08:31:00 | What are the symptoms? Do they get a particular error message from it? If so, what is it, like 630 or 731 or similar... Or does it dial up and then not find web pages? At which point does it fail? Did they chnage anything on the PC lately - install any new software or hardware?

2005-04-29 09:09:00 | Yeah but they tried another laptop using the same cable and phone jack and it worked so it cant be the cable | Overdrive_5000 (4950) | |
2005-04-29 09:45:00 | Yeah but they tried another laptop using the same cable and phone jack and it worked so it cant be the cable Make sure the cable is actually connected to the modem port on the laptop. There is a brand of laptop that needs the cable to be pushed in quite firmly to make a connection. Some people manage to connect it to the ethernet port which will give a no dialtone error.

2005-04-29 10:42:00 | Not sure what OS but try to query the modem from the control panel. XP is phone and modem > modem tab > properties of modem to query. (98 is control panel modems dbl click on modem and query (cant remember too well for 98, must be friday!!) If you can query the modem then 90% modem OK (have had a query but dud modem). It may tell you port is jammed open or give some more hints. GL

Another thing you can do is that see if any physical object is blocking the modem ports that you plug the telephone cable into. Try using a vacuum and suck anything out of it (thought I am not too sure if this is recommended). Cheers :) |
