Its a good idea to clean out any files that are just fluff (Crap cleaner is good for this),disable the swap file and boot into Safe mode before running the defrag. |

I've got Win 98se and so have most of the comps I work on and the defrag can take ages if it hasn't been done for while, but it always finishes. Have a look at the FAQ on "Why does scandisk/defrag stop on 10%?" and also the one at the top on "Basic computer maintenance". The FAQs are excellent. I've never used a 3rd party defragger, always the Windows utility. (And then there's the issue about whether defragging really is necessary or not but I'm in the "I believe in defragging" camp.") HTH....m |

| 350131 | 2005-04-29 08:43:00 | I have recently been clearing out a lot of junk off my hard drive and did a defrag yesterday. Was shocked at how fragmented it was considering that it was only done a month ago. My Win XP Home usually does a pretty good job but I was not particularly pleased with the results this time so I did it again. Am still not impressed but there are plenty more files to get the chop so I'm going to run defrag everyday until it looks a lot more nice and tidy. Might have to give Metla's method a go to see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't... tough. Jolly sure I am not getting a third party defragger. ;) |
