350129 2005-04-29 04:26:00 Imo they don't,Granted back on Win98 it was a slow process but XP defragmenter is pretty good. Can't see the sence in buying something to do the same job that XP does just fine.Having said that, you haven't stated your OS.

Its a good idea to clean out any files that are just fluff (Crap cleaner is good for this),disable the swap file and boot into Safe mode before running the defrag.

350130 2005-04-29 05:15:00 How do you know you are defragging some files and not others? Does the defrag stop/hang? I've got Win 98se and so have most of the comps I work on and the defrag can take ages if it hasn't been done for while, but it always finishes. Have a look at the FAQ on "Why does scandisk/defrag stop on 10%?" and also the one at the top on "Basic computer maintenance". The FAQs are excellent.
I've never used a 3rd party defragger, always the Windows utility.

(And then there's the issue about whether defragging really is necessary or not but I'm in the "I believe in defragging" camp.")

350131 2005-04-29 08:43:00 I have recently been clearing out a lot of junk off my hard drive and did a defrag yesterday. Was shocked at how fragmented it was considering that it was only done a month ago.

My Win XP Home usually does a pretty good job but I was not particularly pleased with the results this time so I did it again. Am still not impressed but there are plenty more files to get the chop so I'm going to run defrag everyday until it looks a lot more nice and tidy. Might have to give Metla's method a go to see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't... tough. Jolly sure I am not getting a third party defragger. ;)

350132 2005-04-29 08:51:00 I find this helpful: Defragment your computer under safe mode.

Cheers :)
