349562 2005-04-28 00:35:00 My lucky mum has bought a new computer and has signed up for the bliink offer through ihug. She will be getting the basic DLink usb ADSL modem DSL-200. I will by default be the fix it person at the other end of the now available phone line! Her usage will be email and browsing only in the main- no flash stuff really. I have freeware versions of Zone Alarm and Kerio ready to go, and her new PC has XP with sp2 and the beta blocking software. She purchased Norton antivirus (OEM) at the same time. So what will be the easiest/effective solution for firewall?
1. XP native firewall
2. Zone Alarm
3. Kerio
4. buy something else?

any advice greatly appreciated as ihug don't seem to have much opinion on the matter.... cheers

349563 2005-04-28 00:49:00 I myself believe Norton Internet Securtity 2004 or 2005 (which includes norton personal firewall) is the way to go

Win xp firewall absolutly sucks and zonealarm is ok but norton rules
Also install spyware protection such as Microsoft anyspyware or ad-aware
the more spyware protection you have the better as all programs have their weaknesses

349565 2005-04-28 01:03:00 Zonealarm is user freindly, free, and does the job. Basics on use of firewall will have to be conveyed to her though (as in install it,let through the few basic apps that need, access then tell the firewall not to let anything else through, and not to bother the user with alerts.

Is that oem copy of Nortons limited to 3 months before requiring more payment?,if so I would suggest she cut her losses when the times up and either get a product worth paying for (nod32) or a good free app (AVG7)

349566 2005-04-28 01:09:00 Avoid NIS 2005. A lot of people have had problems with it. Search Google for "NIS 2005 problem"

Use the free ZA and AVAST! adding the usual, ad-aware, spybot S&D, and you already have the M$ spyware. Also install Firefox or Opera as a browser and avoid IE. Email OE should be fine for simplicity

349567 2005-04-28 01:15:00 I agree go with ZoneAlarm  Overdrive_5000 (4950)
349568 2005-04-28 01:40:00 Norton's firewall is probably the best around, but not much better than the free Kerio.

Norton anti-virus however, although being about the best professional anti-v around, is fraught with issues that emenate from it when trying to diagnose other Windows problems.

349571 2005-04-28 02:10:00 Go with Zone Alarm. Norton 2005 has caused alot of problems and is looking like a software plague.

Another option is Trend Micro which I have found excellent. It is so good of it to never interrupt me while working on my PC!
