| 349807 | 2005-05-09 01:03:00 | I asked them if they had tested it properly for the problems I was describing like installing some large piece of software off it, exploring CD and opening random files, playing a DVD movie and/or burning a test cd maybe? As the unit is no longer under warranty we there isnt much point in testing it further. What we can do is offer you another DVD drive at cost price. I have listed a few links below of drives that may be suitable for you: www.ascent.co.nz cost price: $50.11 www.ascent.co.nz cost price: $55.00 Please note that freight has not been included in these prices. I will be shipping your Aopen drive back today, please let me know if either of the above are suitable for you. No point in testing it further? What did you actually test it for? I don't think they tested it properly at all. "Oh yeah, plugs in and spins up ok, it's working! Nothing wrong with this drive." All very well to offer something at cost price + postage, but I don't feel like buying any **** from Ascent again. |

| 349808 | 2005-05-09 01:44:00 | And I just don't have the money to be replacing all of my DVD drives one week after the warranty expires on them. I have another DVD-RW from Ascent that has warranty left. Maybe I should do a pre-emptive RMA on it one week before the warranty expires? |

| 349809 | 2005-05-15 15:45:00 | I have just tried this thing in my machine again. It does not work at all. I tried a DVD-R which works fine in any other DVD drives and I also tried a DVD movie. The damn thing will not play anything at all. Just locks up the machine, makes it stop responding. This really, really pisses me off. Ascent said they would test it but they did no such thing. They are either lying or just incompetent. If they had tested it properly they would know that it had a fault. But no they'll just deny there is anything wrong with it so they don't have to get me a new one. And we deserve a new one dammit. We paid $95 for this thing and it's given us no end of trouble then it finally stops working completely before a year is even out. Stuff em. Anyone reckon it's worth emailing the New Zealand Computer Society (www.consumer.org.nz) about it so they can make a ruling? Either that or I can go to a small claims tribunal. It would cost me $30 but it would make Ascent pay 5 times as much to send their people down to attend the tribunal. :) Anyway let it be a lesson to anyone thinking that even Ascent have good service. A whole 7 days after your warranty expires, all your expensive hardware aint worth a cent as far as they're concerned. |

Aopen is rubbish. The Sony will last you ages. |

They're actually the exact same drive except different colours. Sony CX320E (OEM Liteon SOHC-5232K). In this case I would need the Liteon so it would match the case colour. Still doesn't make what Ascent did right. |

| 349812 | 2005-05-16 06:45:00 | It is a real mystery to me why Ascent doen't just give you another drive out of their own pockets. I mean it wouldn't really cost them too much and if you returned as a customer they would benefit in the long run (not to mention a proper test could take half an hour of labour ...) I've returned stuff to shops with no receipt before .. :D Make sure you send your experience to the guy at pricespy.co.nz |

| 349813 | 2005-05-17 08:25:00 | Make sure you send your experience to the guy at pricespy.co.nz Yep I will. Does anyone know the email address for the sales manager at Ascent? It says on the site FAQ (www.ascent.co.nz): I have a complaint about your service, what can I do? Please contact our Sales Manager directly and he will be happy to help you. So what's the sales manager's email address? |

| 349815 | 2005-05-17 08:51:00 | I may have missed something here vapo, so forgive me if I have, but did you try this drive in another computer? It is remotely possible that it did test OK at Ascent or wherever and it is not totally beyond the realms of possibility that the fault really does lie in your system. If it still doesn't work in another system and the faults are the same then go and exercise your rights under the CGA and press for a replacement from the dealer who sold it to you. The buck stops with whoever took your money. If you can conclusively show that the drive is faulty then don't give up until they replace it, even if that means getting the Ministry of Consumer Affairs onto their case. Make it easier and less costly for them to replace it instead of arguing, but stick to the facts, and test the darned thing properly first, or get some local PF1er or computer shop to test it for you. You can recover any costs from Ascent if you prove the point, but advise them in advance that they will incur charges if you have to go down that path. The Disputes Tribunal will help enforce payment. Don't get mad, get even! Cheers Billy 8-{) |

Thanks Billy. :) Yes just yesterday I had it in my system and it doesn't work at all. I actually disconnected it last night because it was making the system unstable. So that's two completely different systems it doesn't work in. All the contact details are found under the "Contact Us" tab - Contact details Yep, I've read that page, but I can't see the "Sales Manager" on it. Can you? :) |
