349582 2005-04-30 13:25:00 Norton is a horrid piece of bloat. It'll significanly slow down your system.

ZA is ok, but make sure you know what you're doing. People often end up blocking stuff they shouldn't etc and ZA is known to destroy the TCP/IP stack which can make fixes just that much more fun.

349583 2005-04-30 21:59:00 Funny, in all of these postings I haven't seen any mention of Sygate. I have tried all of the programmes mentioned and keep coming back to Sygate which is also free for the private version. AVG 7 came right after a couple of version updates and I completely disabled the antivirus component of Norton Systemworks 2003 only using the Windoctor and defragging utilities. Together with Mailwasher (a must!) and Ad-aware/Spybot, I've had no problems for some two years or so. The computer is a keystone of my little printing business and I am the owner/moderator of a couple of Yahoo email groups as well as maintaining a website for an incorporated society, so continual safety is imperative. Currently running XP Pro with SP2 (thanks PC World) on an AMD Athlon XP +2200. No problems!! (as he touches his wooden head).

From experience that seems to sum up most of the large catch all type of apps. I prefer to stick with stand along apps for virus and firewalls etc..
