349787 2005-04-28 09:08:00 It's buyer beware - you choose to buy a cheap drive with a 1 year warranty, then you accept the risks. At the end of the day, manufacturers aren't going to take these things back out of warranty (even if it's only 5 days out), because they are making very low margins on these things as it is. somebody (208)
349788 2005-04-28 09:12:00 It was hardly "cheap". Paid about $95 for it at the time, which was about standard price for a combo drive. Similiar drives now sell for about ~$70. Just the brand seems to be dodgy now, but I didn't know it was dodgy at the time and I had another Aopen CD-RW that was working great, so I based the purchase on that.

It would seem the ones with warranties greater than 12months are either external or a lot more expensive. But that's not the point, I would expect a DVD drive to last longer than 4years with general use. We hadn't even burned any CDs with it. :groan:

Do you expect a Lada to last as long as a Rolls Royce?

349790 2005-04-28 23:09:00 Given the same budget for servicing and repairs I would expect a Lada to outlast a RR by many many years. Metla (12)

Don't know why anyone bothers to post anything here . Whatevers said about anything starts an argument .

Your first statement can answer your second . There are other ways of saying, you bought cheap cruddy gear and now you're reaping the benefits . Unsubtley maligning someones choices and knowledge in public is likely draw negative comments from somewhere .

Anyway, I happen to adhere to the point of view, that if you want to sell cheap cruddy gear, you too should reap the benefits of the transaction . Just because a warranty is for, say, one year, is it ok that the expectation of the life of the product should necessarilly be one year too?

See, slightly different point of view, but that doesn't make it an arguement, does it? I think your being a tad sensitive, especially in view of your earrlier remarks .

Dear *****

I have spoken with my supervisor concerning your situation. We would like you to send us the faulty product back to Ascent for testing. Once the fault is confirmed I will send you through a couple of options for replacement. Please let me know the ticket number and the courier company used once you have shipped it.

Here is the Return Authorisation number and instructions for returning the following item(s) to us:

1 x AOpen COM-5232, 52R/52W/32RW/16DVD, Internal, IDE, Black, OEM
:) :D

Now I just thought of something, I better try and clean the laser in case that is the fault. Any easy way to do this? Never had to do it on a CD/DVD drive before.
