349572 2005-04-28 02:14:00 Avast has a problem with ZA Pro's privacy blocking, hence my original advice. Both doing the same thing I suppose. A bit like ZA Pro's earlier popup blocking interfering with Mozilla's feature and causing a conflict.

I prefer a point solution to each security function.

1) Firewall - Ports and program control
2) Anti-Virus - Email and Internet screening
3) Browser - Fast and efficient, and pop up blocking
4) Spyware detection for what is missed
5) User surfs and emails as a normal user, without administrator rights.

A lot of all-in-one solutions is a little like putting all your eggs in one basket. With the above setup, if one component fails at least the others may help avoid problems

LMAO.

Anyhow, Back to my current task, ripping the mess out a machine that went tits up when the owner removed N2003 and installed N2005.

349576 2005-04-28 02:59:00 I loathe Norton Products . I'm only using it at the moment because I'm too poor to afford PC Cillin and Norton was free with my hardware .

It sucks . It interrupts you constantly, Its 'features' aren't any more evolved than Zone Alarm and it is really, really hard to get rid of .

To uninstall Norton correctly one must format . . .

349577 2005-04-28 03:57:00 Thanks to all for the advice from everyone!- I think KiwiTT made a good point regarding all eggs in one basket. theob (7255)
349578 2005-04-28 04:43:00 i usually find trying to teach someone how to use a firewall is the hardest thing . a firewall is a liitle useless if they can't work it and let anything through .

ZA is the easyest to use, nortons is a mongrel to use properly . tiny, kero, outpost aree ok tho its a pain if you have to make custom rules for all your apps tho . auto rule creation is a must for most people .

349579 2005-04-30 10:56:00 I use the FREE Zone Alarm and have ben amazed at the updates in the past year... olldaddy78 (6546)
349580 2005-04-30 12:03:00 I use and like kerio myself, although to be at it's most effective it takes a fair bit of user interaction, especially in the earlier stages after it is set up (about a week to 1 month depending on your usage/activity) . An easier solution would be ZA or Agnitum outpost or an older version of Kerio, get the rules set, and then largely leave it .

I'm a believer in not setting all rules for every situation or using an all in one AV come malware come firewall suite .

The first is just common sense for any firewall as a guard against new exploits, for eg, there are no installation routine rules set for my system . That means that when new software is installed I have to ok it via Kerio every step of the way . Someimes that take 10 to 20 firewall OK's before an installation is completen, tedious but safe . Some software never have permission to do certain things without an OK from me via Kerio . I suspect if you leave your mum with all those decisions she'll be pretty peaved sooner than later and be turning it off, so, turn off unwanted services ( . fateback . com/tweak/winnt/services . html" target="_blank">snakefoot . fateback . com)*, uninstall useless net needy app's, set some common sense rules then let her enjoy her new comp .

The reason for using separate app's rather than all in one is to guard against a bug or vulnerability leaving you totally out in the open, as per malware that disables certain vendor's product .

I have to agree with some of the others, Nortons is a dog . I've had three versions of it with each successive version getting cruddier and cruddier . I think the last one I had was 2002 (oem), it got the boot .

* For services config, I'd normally point to Black Viper . com, but the site looks like it has been grabbed by those **um bags, Network Solutions .

349581 2005-04-30 12:23:00 I find that Agnitum Outpost is OK for new users. The main thing is to setup all the rules for them after installing it. I normally fire up all the apps that I know will access the internet and then set the rules. Leave it running for a bit to catch any other ones that escaped you, and then that should basically be it. If something new tries to access the internet, I tell them to block it once and write down what the program was. Then I check it out for them whether to let it out next time or not.

The ideal thing is to teach them as you go so that they can have informed knowledge about what the firewall is doing and how it works, so that they can handle the program themselves.
