350193 2005-04-29 05:38:00 I have spent the last few days trying to get my new wireless network set up, currently it's a netwon't.

I have a linksys WRT54GS and WMP54GS PCI lan card and I'm running Win XP SP2. Attached to the router is a Dlink 302G DSL modem. I've disabled the 10/100 lan in my pc so as not to create conflicts. The router has been setup via my laptop with the SSID and channel etc.

I can get a connection between the router and the PC but it won't let me connect to the DSL modem. However if I can connect to the internet with my laptop using the LAN on the router. So the problem is with the wireless portion of the network. Anyone had any experience dealing to this kind of issue?

TIA

350194 2005-04-29 05:52:00 do you mean you can connect via an ethernet cable?
But not wirelessly? I don't know that router but I have recently spent considerable time fooling with network stuff, so I may be able to give you the benefit of my ignorance.

350195 2005-04-29 05:57:00 Yes, that's it exactly. Ethernet works fine, so I know the jetstream is on and the modem is working. The wireless adapter says it is connected to the access point, but won't connect to the internet. I'm using a static IP in the router for the internet and I've specified an IP for the wireless PCI adapter ie 192.168.1.150, subnet 255.255.255.0 etc

I can't figure out why it will connect to the router wirelessly but not share the net connection.

350196 2005-04-29 07:00:00 your router manufacturer should have istructions on their website for setting up the router for wireless. Have you got an instruction book that came with the router.
I tried to set mine up using the wizard on the installation disc and it wouldn't work so I reverted to setting it manually and it was a dream. However, mine was a different brand of router. I have tried to access the instructions for this router but it won't open.

350197 2005-04-29 07:43:00 What's the default gateway the PC picks up on Wireless, as that is the path your traffic will go out via.

Chances are you need to put the router in bridge mode if it supports it.

Edit: Are you plugging the DSL modem into the INTERNET port on the back of the wireless router?

Have you followed through their install guide:

350198 2005-04-29 08:09:00 Hi Ninja,

Yep the cable goes from the modem to the WAN port on the router. The gateway I'm connecting to via the modem is 10.1.1.15 and that is what is specified in the static IP I've set up in the Internet settings configuration in the router. It works fine that way via ethernet (through the router), but try getting a wireless connection?! Still if it was that easy everyone would be doing it right?

I've been through the setup a la Linksys and that didn't work. I've also updated the drivers for the PCI card and the firmware in the router, still no joy. Next step is unplugging everything and resetting it all and starting from scratch.

350199 2005-04-29 10:47:00 The problem is solved, at least for the moment. It turns out the signal strength was too low to enable a proper connection. Moving the router closer to the PC has allowed a connection to the net.

Now I have to research ways of increasing the signal strength so I can use the network effectively through the entire house. I've already flashed the router with the Talisman firmware and upped the radio output, might need to think about a wireless range expander, or some hi gain antennae.

350200 2005-04-29 11:49:00 Cool. Was pretty certain that LinkSys stuff was damn near plug n play - not often people have problems.

Least it was easy to sort.

How far away from your PC is the Router? I get excellent signal strength even out in the garden. Maybe you live in a mansion and the router is several hundred metres away?
Maybe you have the router down low? If you raise it up (on a shelf or something) you will get a better range.
Glad to hear you are connected anyway.
