2005-04-28 12:51:00 | I have my P/c running XP pro and the kids P/c with Win98 (I think its SE but it dosn't say so on the start up screen). I know nothing about networking. I have got 2 network cards (not installed yet) I dont need modem or printer shareing. I just wont to be able to play games on the 2 machines (Quake 1 etc.) Any thoughts on the easiest (read cheapest) way to get them talking to each other would be greatly appreciated. Also any other games that could suit this set up? Cheers.

2005-04-28 13:15:00 | You will need a "Crossover" cable if you don't have a hub. 1) Install network cards and drivers 2) Plug in Crossover cable 3) In XP goto "Network Connection" right click on "Local Area Connection", click TCP/IP in the list, then properties. In this screen, check the button to enter the details manually. I'd assign them like this. XP machine : 192.168.0.1 98 machine : 192.168.0.2 Subnet : 255.255.255.0 Gateway : 0.0.0.0 Go through the same process on the 98 machine (the "Local Area Connection" will be in a different place, however. Once you have done that, open up a command prompt on the XP machine (Start -> Run -> cmd) and type "ping 192.168.0.2" (without the quotes) if all goes well, you should get a reply. On the 98 machine, open up a command prompt (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> MS-DOS Promt) do the same but type "ping 192.168.0.1". If both machines can 'see' each other, your good to go. As for the games themselves, I can't help you there but I'm sure someone else can. Oh yes, there may be some little inaccuracies here as I'm recalling this from memory. (I'm a Linux user now, thanks Chill! :)) GTA2 supports network play (dunno bout kids playing that though). So does "FreeCiv (http://www.freeciv.org)".

2005-04-28 13:17:00 | I have my P/c running XP pro and the kids P/c with Win98 (I think its SE but it dosn't say so on the start up screen) . I know nothing about networking . I have got 2 network cards (not installed yet) I dont need modem or printer shareing . I just wont to be able to play games on the 2 machines (Quake 1 etc . ) Any thoughts on the easiest (read cheapest) way to get them talking to each other would be greatly appreciated . Also any other games that could suit this set up? Cheers . Try this guide: Step 1: Install the cards in each computer . Windows should automatically install drivers for them . If it doesn't, you will have to use the CD that came with the cards or search for the driver on the net . Step 2: Once that's done you will need to buy a crossover cable (don't let anyone sell you a patch cable, as it won't work) and run that between the two computers . Step 3a: On the WinXP machine, go into your start menu and select 'control panel' then select and double click on 'networking' and there should be an Icon for 'Local Area Connection' in there . Right click on it and go to properties . There should be a list of different things with small icons next to them . From that list select 'TCP/IP' and then click on the properties button . Set the IP address to '192 . 168 . 155 . 10' and the subnet mask to '255 . 255 . 255 . 0' Save your changes by clicking OK and then exit out of everything . Step 3b: On the Win98 Machine, go to My Computer, then open up control panel and look for a networking icon (not sure what it's called, been a long time since Win98 and me met) and then double click on it . In there there should be another 'Local Area Connection' which you should right click on, select properties and There should be a list of different things with small icons next to them . From that list select 'TCP/IP' and then click on the properties button . Set the IP address to '192 . 168 . 155 . 20' and the subnet mask to '255 . 255 . 255 . 0' Save your changes by clicking OK and then exit out of everything . ---> Not very familiar with Win98 perhaps someone else can give you a more accurate guide there . Step 4: On the WinXP machine go to the Start Menu, then select 'Run' and type 'cmd' Now, ping the IP address of the Win98 computer to test your connection . Please report the result . Step 5: In any of the Games you want to play, just go to Multiplayer or TCP/IP (whichever your game displays) and the two computers should be able to greet each other . Potential Problems: 1 . ) Some older games use a different protocol called IPX/SPX . You can set that up in a similar way to TCP/IP . 2 . ) Most firewalls will restrict access between networked computers and will need to be configured to allow traffic to go through . 3 . ) Win98 can sometimes really be a pain and refuse to be at all friendly when getting networked . If you experience any of these problems please do come back to us and we'll sort you out . Please note, all this is original content all written by me . I hate being referred to tutorials for some things . Networking is one of those, so I decided to write this for you .

2005-04-28 13:17:00 | I'd advise against DSE. Then again, it's just a cable. Try an independant computer store :) Oh yes, if you want to get REALLY technical, go here. www.mdm-zone.com

2005-04-28 13:20:00 | DSE isn't the best place to buy a Network Cable from. Try a local computer store or get one off trademe. The latter is cheaper but will take longer. Make sure to get crossover though! | Aurealis_ (7897) | |
