349430 2005-04-27 12:14:00 Hi All

I have been offline for 36 hours due to my ADSL connection dropping off after almost exactly 2 minutes and 5 seconds each time I connect - that is, IF I can connect.

Xtra & Telecom helpdesks were semi-helpful, depending on who I talked to. I tried everything from another router, disconnecting every phone line device, replacing the cables, checking for viruses, checking connection settings in the browsers and e-mail programmes but mostly I couldn't get a session going. There was no new hardware or software so I was stumped. If I tried to force the connection in the router I got an error message saying 'ppp session is not ready' or something similar and maybe the session would connect, maybe it wouldn't. I was having slightly more luck with a PCI ADSL card but that was pot luck too.

However, any time I talked to an Xtra help desk person, the ADSL connection would unexpectedly start working, but then it would automatically drop off after 2 minutes again. So, I'm thinking that their 'test' would send a pulse or something down the line which would get my session going.

In my opinion, I think there is something wrong with my telephone lines or with the network equipment at Xtra. But do you think I could get someone to actually admit that? And tonight it is suddenly working again 100%, while we await the arrival of a technician - that's enough to make me suspicious that their equipment was at fault all along.

Has anyone else had similar problems with their DSL connection regularly dropping off after 2 minutes? If so, what was your experience? Any thoughts from the telco experts? This is not intended as an anti-Telecom post, I'm interested to hear others thoughts.

Cheers, Andrew

349431 2005-04-27 12:23:00 When Telecom first installed ADSL on your line did they give any warnings about line quality or the likes? Do you have any neighbours nearby with ADSL? If so, you should ask them what their service is like and see if it is a regionalized fault... or something to do with you. Aurealis_ (7897)
349432 2005-04-27 12:33:00 Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that it has been running sweet as at this address since last year & the neighbours are on dial-up. It has been working absolutely perfectly for months until yesterday mornng when we suddenly lost the connection and couldn't get back online. Also, there was no-one working on the lines outside either.

349433 2005-04-27 12:39:00 In that case I would say that someone probably spilt coffee on the DSLAM...

Is your connection stable at the moment? If it lasts the night then it's likely that Telecom has fixed whatever went wrong and the technician will come out tommorow and be a bit stiff at being woken up early.

Good Luck. =)

349434 2005-04-27 12:43:00 Interesting you mention 'DSLAM' - one of the help desk people mentioned that and I presume he was referring to the router at the Telecom/Xtra end. It has now been stable for 3.5 hours. If the connection is still live in the morning I will cancel the technician.
Cheers, Andrew

349435 2005-04-28 03:07:00 DSLAM is the hulk that sends DSL signals out to the seething masses

How did your night go? Connection stable? No grumpy technician?

349436 2005-04-28 08:54:00 Ha! Connection is stable, but the technician was grumpy when we cancelled. It took me about an hour to get through to the help desk, cancelled the technician, whom we had been waiting for since yesterday, who then phoned us within 5-10 minutes asking why we cancelled. I suppose he was missing out on his fee but he was pretty slow to contact us before we cancelled.

At least it's working now and the helpdesk admitted I wasn't the only subscriber experiencing this problem.
Thanks, Andrew
