351145 2005-05-01 08:24:00 My two or three month free time with Norton after buying my new PC is almost up. Now need to uninstall Norton and instal AVG. I run Windows XP

Is the best sequence ?

(1) Download AVG (with Firefox) - but not open the program yet
(2) Unplug my connection with internet via ADSL
(3) Uninstall Norton
(4) Open AVG
(5) Re-connect ADSL again

Seems logical as at no time would I be without a.v. cover ?

351146 2005-05-01 09:15:00 Yes that's what I'd do. But the "uninstall Norton" part in my exp. is not quite as easy as that. You'll need to have a manual hunt for Norrton/Symantec, careful if you've got other symantec products and then a regcleaner or if you're familiar with the reg have a trawl thru yourself. Only then (and you can never be sure you've got the lot) install AVG.
Good luck. Done it myself when Norton's run out. Just what you are planning to do. Still one comp I can't get the 'ghost' of Norton out of. Still works alright.

My God ! -- johnboy --- what a scary document !!! I have version 9.05 for XP and have chosen the appropriate document to print out. I will have nightmares tonight !! Have got a Bells eight year old whisky (with a touch of water) to calm me down.

How about I use the standard uninstal then have a go at the registry after ?

Hi mark c
Have downloaded ccleaner (which I think Chill recommended to me) - had it for a short time on Windows ME and found it very user friendly. Feel comfortable with it.

351152 2005-05-07 03:14:00 Belarc Advisor tells me that I have the following Symantic products -

Symantec Corporation - Common Client Version 1.0.10.006 *
Symantec Corporation - Event Manager Version 1.03.4 *
Symantec Corporation - LiveUpdate Version 2.6.14.0 *
Symantec Corporation - Norton AntiVirus Version 9.05.1015 *
Symantec Corporation - Norton Security Center Version 2005.1 *
Symantec Integrator Version 6.00.17 *
Symantec ScriptBlocking Version 1, 1, 0, 126 *
Symantec Security Drivers Version 5.4 *
Symantec Shared Components Version 2.0 *

Should I keep any of them when I get rid of the av ??
Misty

351153 2005-05-07 03:19:00 most of that will go when you uninstall nortons AV.

if you uninstall the sicurty centre as well (i assume it a seperate install from the AV) you will need to install another firewall.

351154 2005-05-07 03:44:00 If thats Norton Internet Security (or like it), this includes AV as part of the install .

AV isnt a separate install . It's all part of the same program .

So, if u uninstall NIS, it will most probably remove all of those files as well .
