Post ID Timestamp Content User
351001 2005-05-01 06:48:00 Whenever I press Insert > symbol
The appropriate dialogue box opens up normally with one of the symbols already selected as it should be.
However when I click the symbol that I wish to insert, I get no response at all. The selected symbol is not able to be changed to another one by the mouse. In fact the mouse does not seem to be active in this dialogue box at all.
Using the direction arrows does move the selected symbol to another but if I click any of the drop down menus then I cannot get out of the selected drop down menu (by clicking the mouse) and thus the direction arrows no longer work since they now control the drop down menu.
In all other respects my MS Word works properly. i.e. the mouse is normally active in all other dialogue boxes etc.
Uninstalling and re-installing Word has made no difference neither has an attempted repair. I have posted this question on the MS Word forum with no help either.
I am running Windows XP SP 2 Home
Thanks for your help.

351002 2005-05-01 07:17:00 That is really strange. One thing you could try seeing uninstalling and repairing hasn't worked, is to delete the normal.dot file. This file doesn't get removed/modified when you uninstall or repair Word. It can cause odd problems, so there is nothing to lose by trying this. Search your hard drive for the normal.dot file and either rename it or delete it - make sure Word is closed first. This however will remove any customised formatting you have put into the default template (normal.dot) so you will need to re-customise it again afterwards. Jen (38)

Thanks for your suggestion.
Unfortunately deleting the normal.dot file did not fix the problem.
On closer examination of the problem I note that the exact issue is that the mouse seems unable to set the focus in the individual symbol cells.
I can get a response when clicking on the drop down menus or the scroll bar but the only way I can select a specific symbol is to click the scroll bar that changes the automatically selected symbol to one at random but at the same time it sets the focus on the symbol cells themselves and now I can select a specific symbol using the direction arrow keys.
This is a very clumsy and time consuming work around which I would realy like to fix.
Thanks for your help.

351004 2005-05-02 06:26:00 Do you use the same symbols repeatedly?

If so then you can assign keyboard shortcuts to insert them into your documents at will.

For instance in my PC the hearts, clubs, spades and diamonds symbols are assigned and accessed using CTRL C, S, D or H

The shortcuts take about 10 seconds each to setup and done.

Good suggestion but not really applicable to my situation.

351006 2005-05-02 11:58:00 Not a solution but a possible workaround is to use the character map applet instead and copy and paste. Charmap looks like a clone of insert|symbol (or vice versa) though, so it would be interesting to see if the same problem appears there. Tony (4941)

Could you please be more specific.
I am not sure what you mean by the character map applet.
Could you please give me directions as to how to create this.
Many thanks for your interest.

351008 2005-05-03 04:33:00 On my XP Home machine I go to Start|All programs|Accessories|System Tools, and Character map is one of the shortcuts.

The executable is "Charmap.exe" and it lives in the Windows|System32 folder.

I am able to select and copy symbols from the Character map shortcut that you suggest. Thanks for the tip.

I am not sure what you meant by " The executable is "Charmap.exe" and it lives in the Windows|System32 folder."

Charmap . exe is the exe file, relating to the Character Map program .

And thats where this file is .

If you go to start/run and type charmap it will run/load this program
