350790 2005-04-30 10:26:00 got a dvd writer that can use Ultra DMA mode 2 transfer mode
and in windows i can see that it's set to Ultra DMA2/ultra33

but when starting the computer up, after autodetecting ide channels this message shows "secondary ide channel no 80 conductor cable installed"

after searching around with google
i came to this conclusion:
the drive suports a faster data transfer rate than the current cable allows
...something like that..

now before i go and buy a cable that's around $10.. i just want to know how much performance will i actually gain by swapping my old 40pin ide cable with the new 80pin cable

i got a AMD AthlonXP 2000+...i was thinking maybe the small speed increase won't even be noticable..what do u guys think?

350791 2005-04-30 10:30:00 3 -5 times faster.

not saying that your computer will be faster just data transfer to / from the drive.

get one.

350792 2005-04-30 11:14:00 um..oki..that's good news i guess

just out of interest..is there some program that can let me test its transfer speed?
to hdd or something...

350793 2005-04-30 11:39:00 There are specific HDD and bus tranfer benchmarking software about but, AFAIK you'll need to pay for them to get anything decent. Murray P (44)
350794 2005-04-30 11:43:00 nero gotta drive speed test built in.......nero toolkit drcspy (146)
350795 2005-05-01 06:43:00 um...i thought it was just for testing how fast the disc can be read..not how fast it can transfer onto hdd..
i'll giv it a try anyway..

350796 2005-05-03 05:50:00 um..just another question..
on the specs of my dvd writer..it says:
Supported transfer mode : PIO mode 4, DMA mode 2 and Ultra DMA mode 2
right now in windows it says it's using Ultra DMA2/ultra33..so the fastest mode it can go to

i set my ata controller to let bios to choose the correct transfer mode, and bios chose Ultra DMA2/ultra33 but says no 80pin cable avaliable..but still uses that mode

does that mean that unless my device, such as my hdd that uses faster transfer modes such as ultra DMA5 - Ultra 100 then it has to have the 80pin cable?
but for ultra DMA2, 80pin wouldn't speed up transfer as much because the data that's going through doesn't really require the 80pin cable?

350797 2005-05-03 06:36:00 The BIOS is really saying that it's using 33 MHz because the cable isn't 80 wire. It requires an 80-wire cable for 100 MHz and higher. Graham L (2)
350798 2005-05-03 07:03:00 Just make sure DMA is enabled in Windows and BIOS and it should auto select the best speed...

Most writers seem to use DMA mode 2/33Mhz...

If you've got a Gigabyte mobo you can manually set the cable type in advanced options - the 80 conducter error message doesn't seem to mean much on my system - this error message is displayed when a 80 conducter cable is used and just because my cd writer is using DMA2...

350799 2005-05-03 07:29:00 a lot of DVD drives use ata66 which requires an 80 wire cable installed. useing a 40 wire cable will restrict you to ata33.

if you havn't done so, install a 80 wire cable. its not exspencive :)
