350472 2005-04-29 22:38:00 Will adding more memory speed up your internet connection? Because the comp can process more info and so be able to take more. Is the limited amount of RAM on a comp I'm fiddling with (64Megs) effectively limiting the amount that can be downloaded. This seems odd to me, can't see how it can affect your line and incoming data, but have to ask. Say you've got programs running in the background that slow the whole machine down.....hmm. No I don't think so. OK so tell me I'm wrong.

TIA........m

350473 2005-04-29 22:51:00 More details on your O.S, Internet Conection, etc. I don't think it will slow the actual speed of the download but depending in the above it may slow down the time it takes for the page to actually show up even though the whole thing is downloaded. Thats my guess anyway bluepoles (7281)
350474 2005-04-29 23:27:00 yes and no. more ram will not change the internet speed. the speed is dictated by hone lines and how fast the ycan send data to you.

however if the pc is patheticly slow (eg p60 running w98) the pc may not be able to process the data fast enough. (people seem to love shoving big fat OS's on slow pc's)

2nd problem is IE. the default cache setting is often HUGE. exspecially with minimal ram the pc can take longer to sort through the cache than it could to actually download the data. the slower the pc the smaller size the cache needs to be set at.

350475 2005-04-30 01:09:00 Hmmm. Great. More or less what I thought. OS is Win98se using Mozilla Seamonkey 1.2.2. Don't know the processor speed but at a guess I'd say somewhere around 3-400mgz. Not on that machine at the moment. It is painfully slow. Anyway thanks, going to flog some mem out of an old dunga and see what happens. Thanks....m

And thanks for the tip about the cache.

350476 2005-04-30 01:15:00 If this is an older machine, then the modem might be of slower speed. Is it a 56K Modem? Jen (38)
350477 2005-04-30 01:29:00 Yes Jen it is. It's not an ancent machine, probably born with W95 and now upgraded to 98se. Never has anything to do with modem slower than 56. I have sped it up a lot by clearing a lot of stuff off, and tidied up the reg and shut down a whole lot of things. Good exercise really. Thanx.....m mark c (247)
350478 2005-04-30 01:43:00 I have said it before a few times now, but on the old PC the latest version of Opera has made a very noticeable difference to browsing speed. Using IE and Firefox it was painfully slow, even on ADSL, which I put down to it being a much slower computer than this one but Opera's pages load really quick now. By that I mean not only opening multiple pages in the background but downloading the content into them as well.

FYI it is a Pentium 2 266MHz with 160MB RAM running Win 98. As you can see it has a lot more RAM than your machine so it could very well be worth putting another 128MB in. In fact, I would if it were me. ;)

350479 2005-04-30 01:48:00 Yeah thanks Foxy tried Opera on it but wouldn't install properly. Wiil get more RAM.

D'you think when we're all geriatrics we'll be saying "If only I had more memory?" :D :D

Never mind about when we are all geriatrics, I keep saying that now!! :D

350481 2005-04-30 03:10:00 You've got the memory still, but it's WOM, not ROM or RAM. Graham L (2)
