350265 2005-04-29 12:45:00 Although I have a Conexant HCF V.92 56K Speakerphone PCI Modem installed, my normal internet connection speed is only 33.6kbs instead of 56kbs. Is there some way I can convince the modem to connect at its correct speed ?
under Control Panel/Modem Properties I normally set the maximum speed well above the theoretical 56. I am running Win98se on an 2.00 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP system. I would appreciate some expert advice.
Thanks

350267 2005-04-29 21:38:00 AFAIK the 56k is the theoretical max which you are most unlikely to reach. That is only for perfect conditions. There are lots of reason why your speed will be slower. Check for programs running in the background that you don't need that are using resources. Check Start/Run and type in msconfig and look at the Startup. Check through the programs listed to start at startup and uncheck what you don't need. Try also putting something like "slow internet connection" into Google and you'll come up with lots of sites with tips about how to speed things up. Done it myself. mark c (247)
350268 2005-04-29 21:51:00 The max speed setting does not control your connection speed,
The is done by adding extra settings to you modem but your problem is more likely be due to phone line issues.
Are you in a rural area?

Check to see if you modem speed speed has already been reduced for some reason
Double click My Computer and double click Dialup networking
Right click your ISP icon and click Properties
Select Configure for your modem
Select Connections and then Advanced
If there is anything in the Extra Settings box remove then.
Click OK all the way out and restart computer and try that.
