I can select different symbols in the Charmap program which will have to do as a work around but strangely my mouse still does not select symbols when the application is running in Word.

351012 2005-05-03 05:15:00 I am able to select and copy symbols from the Character map shortcut that you suggest. Thanks for the tip.Glad to help. Still doesn't help you with the original Word problem though - that's really weird. :@@: Tony (4941)
351013 2005-05-03 08:18:00 Hi symiggy. When you are playing with symbols, remember that your system has two separate sets of Character Maps. You initially mentioned Insert Symbol which indicated that you were using Word's character map. This is different from XP's character map version which is available through Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools. Not sure that this helps your particular problem, but just my two cents worth. ;) Scouse (83)
351014 2005-05-03 08:52:00 I'm not on a Windows system at the mo, but just a thought. Have you looked in Tools > Options > in Fonts or Language or Local settings? AFAIK, Symbols are Unicode fonts, these should be system wide so, whatever works for your Character Map should work in Word too unless some Office or Word setting/corruption is preventing it. Have you checked whether Insert > Symbol works in other Office App's? Murray P (44)

Thanks for clearing that up. I was not sure if they were separate programs or linked.
The fact that I have no problem with XP's Character map, while the one in MS Word is problematic, would certainly support what you say.
Sadly it still doesn't solve the original problem.

Murray P:
My copy of Word is part of Works Suite so I don't have any other Office apps to try.
My first thought was that something was corrupted in Word but un-installing and re-installing the program has had no effect.
I can only conclude that some setting in Word is causing the bother ..but what it is eludes me.

351016 2005-05-03 23:25:00 Try Insert in the other Works Suite app's then. Does it have spreadsheet, publishing and presentation app's? Murray P (44)

There does not seem to be any other apps in which Insert>Symbol can apply as part of Works Suite.
The Spreadsheet does not have that option and there is no publishing application

351018 2005-05-04 00:02:00 It could well be a corruption of "normal.dot", it causes all sorts of similar issues and is not fixed with a reinstall.

Go here:

Scroll down to "Trobleshooting Word" and start at step 3.

351019 2005-05-04 00:29:00 Hmm, ever thought of using Open Office? ;) Much more powerful than Works and it's free. It was on one of the PC World cover CD afew months back if you don't want to download it, assuming of course that you would consider using it.

I wondering whether a you could try: Back up first. Search for normal.dot and delete all instances you find, uninstall Works Suite, uninstall Windows Character Map, Document Templates and replace/refresh system fonts (Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows componetnts button > Highlight & click Details button until you find what you want > uncheck the tick box. Repeat in revrse to reinstall later), you'll need the Windows CD, clean out your temp files, etc, (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz 5). Reinstall everything.

Deleting and/or renaming normal.dot was Jen's suggestion at the beginning of this thread which unfortunately did not help.
On reading further in the reference that you supplied, I'm not sure I am competent enough to meddle with the registry which is apparently the next step.
Is there anything else I can do?
Thanks
