LOL

sorry but V92 still only downloads at 56k, its the upload thats improved and afaik no ISP uses V92 so your V92 mopdem simply runs at V90.

350484 2005-05-01 04:12:00 Im running a 200mhz 64 edo ram here.I find opera 8 loads website alot faster than firefox and IE.I should go and try netscape 7.3 as well.
Firefox uses too much ram just slows my computer down.I remember once took me 10mins to load the page i want.Decided to go to opera.I used the opera 7 in the past found it quite nice but a little bit slower than firefox but now with the 8th version. Its very good however it sometimes crash .Opera sometimes creates an illegal operation....invalid page.I think its just my computer being too slow

350485 2005-05-01 04:15:00 btw there are serveral settings that can make opera a bit quicker on slow pc's. check out opera's forums.

the only real problem i've come accross with opera is with poor video drivers. crap drivers do not play nicely with opera.

350486 2005-05-01 06:11:00 I'm going to have a go at reinstalling Opera. Uninstalled because of poor graphics display (!), had it happen on a couple of machines and never managed to fix it, just gave the peeps another browser.

I think the cause of the slowness of this machine (at home) may be line noise. Crackles and pops like breakfastime, and I can hear what sounds like an electric fence. (Rural area) Read somewhere that line noise slows your modem as it very cleverly adjusts to all the noise by making smaller or more secure packets or with more corrective data, something like that. (sorry bit vague, was late.)
:D :)

350487 2005-05-01 06:57:00 do a download test and see exactly the speed your downloading at then string your modem to match that speed. tweak'e (69)
350488 2005-05-01 07:54:00 Thanks for that tweak'e did a test at eircom and said 14.4 Kbps so changed the modem speed to that and now the "hover over the monitors " says 21.6 instead of the 19.8 it used to ne. Totatlly confused.wel OK not toally but a bit puzzled. Thanks for your help..m mark c (247)
350489 2005-05-01 08:47:00 how did you change the modem speed? tweak'e (69)
350490 2005-05-01 09:07:00 Control panel / Modems and then a box that's got two listed but I think the 2nd is redundant. Highligted LT WinModem (the 1st one) and then Properties and then changed the speed to 19200 (sorry error earlier aboit it being 14000, doesn't appear) and then I checked "only connect at this speed" and now at the "hover over the monitors" it says 21600.

Has been varying (before I tried changing the speed) between 18 something and the max so far has been 33600. Doesn't seem to be any connection between the set speed and the "Hov. over the Mons." record. Much appreciate yr help. I wonder if it could something to do with drivers? I am a complete ignoramis about drivers. Never updated one. cheers........m

Correct. Line noise will in fact slow down the Internet on dialup. The original connection will train up or down. Don't expect to get 56K from a 56K modem. Best I had here was 49.3 K using Xtra as the ISP at that time.

Rather than call Telecom techs you can try this:-

If your modem is a FAX/MODEM wich most are then create a text file and FAX it to 0800-108-208. Leave the Fax program running to recieve a FAX and they will send you a Fax back. This fax back will give you line noise data.
