351633 2005-05-03 04:37:00 Hi Y'all,

I'm having problems with my backup software (sometimes hangs writing disks etc) and I'm beginning to suspect (without much evidence) that maybe the writer itself is dodgy. Does anyone know of software that can test/exercise a CD-writer and report on the results? I've done stuff like making sure the firmware is up to date.

TIA.

351634 2005-05-03 04:40:00 What burner have u got? And what program are u using for burning?

And what version of windows have u got? how much ram is installed?

And what ide connection is it on? Is it on the same ide connection as a cd/dvd or a hard drive?

351635 2005-05-03 05:09:00 Nero has a module for putting a cd drive through its paces, probally need to dl the full app to get a time limited version of it.

Sanda has a free version that should do it,and there is a little app called burnin that will spank your system sideways trying to force a fault, optical drives included.

http://www.sisoftware.net/ for sandra

www.passmark.com for burnin app, I would try this one first.

351636 2005-05-03 05:31:00 Writer is Asus CRW5224-A

Athlon 2.2 XP home 512mb ram. Writer is secondary master, no secondary slave.

Thanks Metla, I'll give those a go.

351637 2005-05-03 05:43:00 Ah ok the same burner I use here.

So, the 1.50 firmware update is on it now?

That's the latest firmware update.

And what backup software are u using?

351638 2005-05-03 06:01:00 Yes, I have the 1.50 firmware.

I have been using NovaBackup from Novatstor - which seems to randomly hang on the second or subsequent CD, and I've been trying Genie Backup Manager, which keeps telling me I have disk errors - which I don't think is true, as it is all new media, and anyway they write OK with other apps.

I've also tried BackupMyPC, which seems to work OK, but it lacks a couple of features I would like.

351639 2005-05-03 06:09:00 I would just use Nero and a CDRW and use Nero Express / data / data disc option.

You just add whatever exe install files, you want.

Or Nero Backitup (part of Nero), if u have Nero and this program.
