351586 2005-05-02 22:26:00 Win XP Home XP.2

Just to gain a bit more experience I booted from the XP cd and tried to enter the Recovery Console. All went well until I was asked for the admin password. I have had this pc from new and never made use of a password for any reason. I tried just hitting Enter but got the Invalid password message. I can get into other admin functions including Safe Mode without using a password.

Can you advise on how to work around this problem please?

351587 2005-05-02 22:58:00 It's not a good idea to be using the PC without passwords, IMO, it's fault of MS/Windows that this can be done at all.

Scroll down to items 16 & 17 for password recovery and reset (snakefoot.fateback.com). Other articles on installation and recovery precede the password ones.

351588 2005-05-02 22:58:00 Hi Valerie
Am posting a link to an older thread, and although the person was talking about XP home, some answers related to XP Pro. See if any of their suggestions work for you - 2 pages.

351589 2005-05-02 23:17:00 Strange, seeing as its impossible to assign a pw to the admin account in XP home edition, wonder if they mucked with that in Sp2.

You should by rights be able to gain access just by hitting enter (as you say you have already done).

351590 2005-05-04 03:22:00 Update - Finally edited the Registry to get round the problem (after lots of advice of course). Apparently a well known XP Home problem for which there is a workaround using Admin Tools but only on the Pro version.

Thanks to all
