351491 2005-05-02 08:30:00 Hi
I have recently started getting error messages
when I right click on files to chose a program
to open them with. It doesnt occur everytime
but lately seems to be more frequent

The error is :

explorer.exe Application error

The instruction at 0x0095582b referenced memory at 0x30303034
The memory could not be written

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on Cancel to Debug the program
I then have to close all open windows to continue normally
This only happens on right clicking not left clicking
My computer runs fine in every other area

Does anybody know if this related to failing hard drive or possibly memory?
I have run Memtest and it doesnt seem to find any errors with memory
Any ideas would be much appreciated thankyou

351492 2005-05-02 08:41:00 Are you sure that is the correct error message in every detail?

What OS, including patches/updates? (repair/replacement of files may depend on version)

Clean out temp files, cache and recycle bin, do a Disk Cleanup (right click C: choose Properties, click on the Disk Cleanup button)

Try repairing or reinstalling IE,

Scan for malware.

351494 2005-05-02 09:22:00 Right click My Computer, if you can, and choose Manage (alt; Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > expand Event Viewer > check out times around the time you get the crashes by double clicking the event (nav by up/down, arrows) and note the applications, services or .dll files and errors. Do this for both System and Application events.

I'd be putting SP2 on that thing pretty smartish.

351495 2005-05-02 09:51:00 It could be a broken shortcut, or a corrupt file. Note what you are doing every time the error appears and see if you notice a pattern. That way you may be able to narrow it down to a specific folder or file. pctek (84)
351496 2005-05-02 19:26:00 I will be interested in the answer as I get the same message occasionally when
I shut down right before "the lights go out"
It is not a hassel tho as it carries on and shuts after a few seconds.
